We've been seeing quite a few violations of state law in regards to leaves in dumpsters this fall. It may seem like a quick and easy option, but leaves are not allowed to go in dumpsters with your trash or construction debris.

Here’s why, and how you can properly dispose of yard waste instead.

1. Yard Waste Is Banned from Landfills in Minnesota
According to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), yard waste such as leaves, grass clippings, branches, and garden debris cannot be mixed with regular household garbage or placed in dumpsters.

Yard waste bans help keep organic materials out of landfills, where they would otherwise take up valuable space and create methane gas as they decompose. Instead, these materials can be composted into nutrient-rich soil.

2. You Could Face Fines or Extra Fees
If leaves or yard waste are found in your rented dumpster, additional disposal fees may apply or the load may be refused entirely. We are required to comply with local and state landfill restrictions – so it’s important to follow the rules to avoid penalties.

3. Better Options for Leaf Disposal in Brooklyn Park
There are several convenient and eco-friendly ways to get rid of leaves and yard waste in Brooklyn Park:

Maple Grove Yard Waste Drop-Off Site: Hennepin County operates a free yard waste collection site for residents. You can drop off leaves, grass clippings, and small branches (usually open from spring through late fall).

Curbside Yard Waste Collection: Most garbage haulers offer seasonal yard waste pickup. Contact your hauler for details about schedules and acceptable containers.
