A message from Dr. Frank Sorrentino:

Sadly, on July 9th, we were informed of the passing of Dr. Arthur J. Hughes who served the St. Francis College community with such distinction since 1962. Dr. Hughes was not only a great teacher and scholar, he was a man who inspired and encouraged generations of SFC students. He served as a mentor and a friend. Needless to say, he was loved and adored.
The History and Political Science Affinity group, in cooperation with the Offices of Alumni Relations and Development, will sponsor a memorial service for Dr. Hughes on October 23rd at St. Francis College beginning at 6PM. The mass will be followed by a reception where we will honor his memory and celebrate the many gifts that he shared with each of us throughout a life well-lived. We will present The St. Clare medal to his family for his distinguished service and Franciscan humanitarianism. We will also present the Dr. Arthur J. Hughes Award for Excellence in Teaching. The Dr. Arthur J. Hughes award has been presented for over 10 years, and was named after him because he was emblematic for great teaching at St. Francis College. We believed that we would be remiss if he were not also a recipient -- he was scheduled to receive it on May 9th. We hope as many friends of Dr. Hughes will attend the memorial service. We also encourage all to participate by sharing orally,or in writing your favorite memories of this legendary teacher and treasured friend.
Dr. Hughes' students remember him for guiding them to practice law in areas of civil service and non-profits. He is remembered for telling his students that one of the things he is most fond of about St. Francis College students is that, "They want to do well, which is natural, but they want to do good in doing well."
I am looking forward to seeing you on October 23rd for the Dr. Hughes Memorial service!
All the Best!

Professor of Political Science
