If you’re the parent of a rising senior, now is a great time to gently encourage your student to take a few early steps before the school year starts.

Creating a Common App account and completing the basics—like the activities list, and the profile, family, and education sections—can relieve a lot of pressure come fall. It also gives students time to reflect before diving into their essays.

Here’s a simple to-do list for August:
✔️ Set up the Common App account
✔️ Add colleges and track supplemental essays
✔️ Complete basic information
✔️ Draft (or update) activities descriptions
✔️ Begin (or revisit) the personal statement

Senior year moves quickly. Starting now allows for a more thoughtful — and less stressful — college application experience.

And if your student could use expert guidance, we’re here to help every step of the way: www.educationaladvocates.com/contact

Most students start their Common App essay by picking a topic. The stronger move? Start by understanding what the prompt is actually asking...

✅ Each of the 7 prompts centers on a different theme: growth, curiosity, adversity, or insight
✅ Your topic might fit more than one prompt, but you need to commit to just one
✅ The best stories often come from small, everyday moments, not big achievements

When students understand the prompt first, the right story tends to follow!
