Campus visits are an important part of applying to college. And for students with learning disabilities, these visits can be vital for determining if the school is a good fit. Many disability services look similar online, but visiting campus is where families discover how support actually works.
Here is our list of questions to ask while you are on campus. If possible, make an appointment with disability services in advance or email questions to the appropriate contact.
Ask About the Transition to College:
Many colleges offer programming or course work to help students successfully transition to college life.
- Is there a summer orientation or bridge program for students with disabilities?
- Is there an optional first-year seminar focused on college adjustment?
Ask About Academic Support:
Academic support is available to all students on campus regardless of disability status. It can vary from school to school. It is important to get the specifics about what resources are available to students when classes begin.
- Is there a writing skills center and a math skills center on campus? Is it centralized (in one place?)
- Are there academic coaches who support students with executive functioning needs?
- Are the coaches trained professionals or peers (other undergraduates or graduate students). Is there a limit to the number of hours per week they are available? Is there a fee for coaching?
- How accessible are professors and teaching assistants outside class (office hours, email responsiveness)?
