Can you back out of Early Decision?

The short answer: It's complicated.

Early Decision is a binding commitment, not legally, but professionally. Thousands of students apply ED each year for better acceptance odds and early peace of mind. But what happens when circumstances change?

You CAN be released from ED if:
→ The financial aid package makes attendance impossible
→ You experience a serious family emergency
→ Documented extenuating circumstances arise

You CANNOT rescind because:
→ You changed your mind
→ You got into your "real" dream school
→ You want to compare other offers

Many families don't realize that rescinding without approval can impact not just you, but future applicants from your high school. Colleges communicate, and they take these agreements seriously.

The bottom line? Only apply Early Decision if you're 100% certain about the school AND have run the financial aid calculators with your family.

Flexibility matters? Consider Early Action instead, where you still get early results without the binding commitment.

Recording a college video introduction? Here's what admissions officers actually want to see.

Each school that has optional video introductions has different expectations, but one rule applies everywhere: authenticity beats production value.

The strongest videos follow this 90-second structure:

Hook (0-10s): Your name + one memorable detail
Evidence (10-40s): Show a tangible project or role
Connect (40-70s): Explain why it matters to you
Close (70-90s): Your potential contribution

What admissions officers don't want:
❌ Scripted performances
❌ High-production montages
❌ Content that contradicts your essays

What they do want:
✓ Clear audio and lighting
✓ Direct eye contact
✓ Authentic communication

A poorly executed video can actually weaken your application. If you're simply repeating your resume or are really not comfortable behind a camera, skip it.
