Who are the influential personalities and visionaries behind the ecumenical movement?

This spring, the Huffington Ecumenical Institute at Hellenic College Holy Cross will offer a course exploring the contributions of key figures who have shaped the cause of Christian unity across denominational boundaries.

The class is entitled “The Ecumenical Movement: The Visionaries” and will be offered by Fr. Nicolas Kazarian, Ph.D.

From early pioneers to modern-day visionaries such as Pope Paul VI, Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, this course will examine the diverse array of individuals, clergy and laity alike, who have played pivotal roles in fostering dialogue, reconciliation, and cooperation among different Christian traditions.

Through in-depth study and analysis of their writings, speeches, and actions, students will gain a deeper understanding of the complexities and dynamics of the ecumenical movement, and how these personalities have left an indelible mark on its history and trajectory.

Last week, Fr. John Chryssavgis was in Chantilly, France, for an international conference organized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate marking the 10th anniversary of the Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church.

Fr. John chaired a special panel on the reception of the Council and the development of the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s social document, For the Life of the World: Toward a Social Ethos of the Orthodox Church. He also participated in the concluding session reflecting on the Council’s significance and its prospects for the future.

The conference brought together scholars and representatives from across the Orthodox world for several days of dialogue, reflection, and exchange.

His Grace joined us at the invitation of the Huffington Ecumenical Institute for the recent Bartholomew Colloquium, which brought together distinguished church leaders and scholars to honor His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and reflect on 35 years of his remarkable patriarchal ministry.

While on campus, Bishop Maxim also offered thoughtful and inspiring words to HCHC students preparing for ministry and parish life—an especially meaningful extension of the conversations that took place throughout the Colloquium.

I was instantly inspired because the concept of meeting—and opening up to—other people and other worldviews is precisely how I envisaged and have implemented the goals of the Huffington Ecumenical Institute. ...."
