At First School of Mathematics we take a well established and successful approach to education in mathematics and science. Designed as an after school and weekend enrichment program, FSM offers comprehensive tutoring to students of K through 12th grades. Our students take advanced level math classes in public and private schools, successfully pass SAT tests, and enroll in the top Colleges and Univ

ersities in the USA and abroad. We believe that every child can and will succeed given the right opportunity. Our doors are open to all students who want to receive comprehensive mathematical education and SAT prep - the foundation for a future success in life. We believe that besides direct mathematical knowledge, the experience of participation in the program will be beneficial to all students regardless of what career he or she may choose later. Our mission is to provide top quality mathematical tutoring and SAT preparation to the Boston area community. Our main objective is to fill in the gaps between different levels of requirements in Middle School, High School, and College. We strive to develop higher-order thinking, reasoning capabilities, and problem solving skills. We teach how to learn and understand the material instead of memorizing it, how to see the logic behind a problem, how to feel comfortable with the solution. Another branch of our services is aimed at providing challenging environment to fast learners and gifted students. Our materials incorporate problems and topics not covered in regular schools, problems requiring insight and ability to develop an idea. This, in our opinion, is the core of productive and successful learning.

=== Problem of the Week: The Bridge ===

Four people are crossing a bridge from one side of the river to the other in full darkness. They have one torch.

The bridge can hold no more than two people at the same time. The torch must be carried when crossing the bridge.

The first person can cross the bridge in 1 minute, the second -- in 2 minutes, the third and fourth -- in 8 and 10 minutes respectively.

So the first pair crosses the bridge, one person returns with the torch, then the second pair crosses and so on. Every pair crosses the bridge at the pace of the slower person: for example if one person can cross in 2 minutes and the other in 10 minutes together they will take 10 minutes.

Find the shortest amount of time for all of them to cross the river.

John asked Peter, "How old are your sons?"
"I have three sons", -- answered Peter, "the product of their ages is 36 and the sum is equal to the number of windows in the building across the street".
John was able to calculate the number of windows but was unable to figure out the ages of the three sons. Peter had to add the his eldest son is blond.
How old are Peter's sons?
