U - Undercarriage - proper position
M - Mixture - adjust for altitude (rich below 3000 MSL)
P - Propeller/Power - as required
S - Systems - radios/lights/cabin controls

Before Takeoff
C - Controls - free and correct
I - Instruments - Airspeed/Attitude Indicator/Altimeter/Rate of Climb/Heading indicator/Turn Coordinator
G - Gas - Fullest tank/Fuel Pump on
A - Attitude - Trim set
R - Run up - Magneto Check/Carburetor Heat
Radios - set for TO/Climb
S - Systems - lights/cabin controls
Safety - Seat belts/doors/traffic

Keep it simple. Fewer distractions in the cockpit means the pilot is looking outside. Situational awareness improves and fewer accident occur.
