As we settle into the new school year, the St. Paul's community paused to come together on the hill to celebrate “One St. Paul's” at our annual all-school convocation.

With reflections about community and our campus family, Chaplain Josh Laws and President Clark Wight, along with faculty speakers Gracie Smith, SPSG director of curriculum and instruction, and Martellies Warren, SP middle school music teacher, set the tone for the year ahead. The morning also included a blessing of the entire school community from the campus chaplains. It was a meaningful way to begin the school year—rooted in faith, purpose, and community.

Over the summer, several SPSG faculty members used faculty grants to explore the world beyond the classroom.

"I hoped to learn the answers to why and how these textiles endure over the centuries and are passed down to descendants." — Andrea Vespoint

Ms. Vespoint spent five full days in Oaxaca, Mexico, this July, observing and learning old and new textile art techniques—weaving and embroidery—specific to the Zapotec people of Southern Mexico. She's bringing what she learned directly into her upper school Spanish classrooms, where students will create and describe their own work and how it connects to them, their families, and their communities, exploring design, shapes, lines, and color across past, present, and future. In Level 5, students will use hand looms to weave bookmarks or textile squares; in Spanish 3, the class will build a larger collective woven piece together; and in Spanish 1, students will add color and design with yarn to a family photo after studying themes of family and identity.

Ms. Vespoint’s trip was made possible by the Class of '88 Award, established by grateful alumnae at SPSG.

Over the summer, several SPSG faculty members used faculty grants to explore the world beyond the classroom.

"I loved the idea of attending a wellness resort, but I found it challenging to find the time to invest in myself and prioritize my own well-being." — Kristin Serio

Ms. Serio spent four incredible days at a wellness resort tucked away in the Poconos, finally able to step away from the bustle of everyday life and unplug. She's incredibly grateful the grant allowed her to turn that dream into reality—highlights included a nighttime kayak tour where she watched the full moon rise above the treetops, trying wall yoga suspended from a wall, and a three-mile hike with over 500 feet in elevation gain up a local mountain.

Ms. Serio's trip was made possible by the Howard F. "Howdy" Knipp III Fund, established in 2019 to honor Mr. Knipp for his 25 years of service as a teacher, coach, and mentor. The fund provides middle school faculty grants to pursue restorative trips in the great outdoors.

Over the summer, several SPSG faculty members used faculty grants to explore the world beyond the classroom.

"I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone to better understand what it means to have the growth mindset I encourage in my students." — Ann Jorgensen

This summer, Ms. Jorgensen traded the familiar for the unknown, trekking five days through the Highlands of Iceland. Facing extreme weather, difficult terrain, and moments of real fear, she leaned on her husband, their guide, and an incredible team to keep moving forward. She came home with unforgettable memories and a renewed belief in her ability to take risks, embrace challenges, and grow both personally and professionally—the experience taught her that courage isn't the absence of fear, but the decision to keep going despite it.

Ms. Jorgensen was the recipient of the Dr. Evelyn Flory Fund which was established by Dr. Flory, former SPSG head of school, to recognize the creative and innovative talents of the faculty and staff by encouraging them to undertake a summer experience that goes beyond the routine and ordinary in a manner not connected to their role at the school.

Green💚 or White🤍? 
 
Today, our newest Gators found out where they belong. Team captains led the annual Green and White Induction ceremony, welcoming new students and employees into one of SPSG’s most spirited traditions. Green and White Teams will compete against each other throughout the year during Fun Fridays, Puttin’ on the Hits (lovingly known as POTH), and more—all to earn bragging rights and the coveted McDavid Bowl awarded during Class Day in June. It’s the kind of friendly rivalry that turns into instant community.🐊
