A proud morning for the School of American & Global Studies. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Friday's commemoration opened with oral histories recorded right here at South Dakota State University. Two of those interviews were conducted by U.S. History students Mallory Knutson and Emma Olthoff under the direction of Dr. Chuck Vollan. Students asking their own families the questions we rarely stop to ask, and sharing those findings with the community. Dr. Christi Garst-Santos moderated the panel discussion that followed. We can't think of a better example of what the humanities do at a land-grant university.

Our thanks to the South Dakota State - College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences for bringing these special guests to Brookings and inviting us to collaborate.

πŸ“œ In July 1776, the Declaration of Independence was immediately translated into German β€” because roughly 275,000 people in the thirteen colonies spoke German as their primary language.

Two copies of that broadside survive anywhere in the world. One is at Gettysburg College. One is in Berlin.

On Sept. 29–30, the School of American & Global Studies brings that story to SDSU for our America250 signature event, Two Copies, Many Stories.

πŸŽ™οΈ Tuesday, Sept. 29 | 6:30 p.m. | Founders Recital Hall, Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center
Historian Dr. Emily Sneff β€” author of "When the Declaration of Independence Was News" (Oxford UP, 2026) and consulting curator for "The Declaration's Journey" at the Museum of the American Revolution β€” on how the Declaration traveled in 1776: in broadsides and newspapers, read aloud in public squares, in German translation, in exchanges with Native nations. Free and open to the public. Reception and book signing to follow.

πŸ” Wednesday, Sept. 30
Dr. Sneff joins SDSU students for a working session. They'll tour "The Declaration's Journey" virtually β€” walking the exhibition with the curator who built it β€” and then turn to archival materials from Briggs Library Archives & Special Collections and the South Dakota Art Museum to design an exhibit of their own. Curatorial thinking, learned from someone who does it at the national level.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ This is what civic engagement looks like at STATE.
On Thursday, Sept. 17, the second floor of Lincoln Hall becomes a working classroom in democracy. "From the Constitution to the Ballot Box" brings students, faculty, and Brookings community members together to register to vote, learn what's actually on the ballot, and argue good-naturedly over constitutional trivia β€” with pizza.

πŸ“‹ 9 a.m.–5 p.m. β€” Nonpartisan voter information and registration at the second-floor info desk, hosted by the SDSU Political Science Club, Pre-Law Society, Student Engagement volunteers, and the Brookings League of Women Voters.

πŸŽ™οΈ Noon–1 p.m. β€” "250+ Years of American Civics and News: How They're Both Covered in the U.S. Constitution," with Carson Walker (South Dakota News Watch) and Dr. Jon Ruff (SDSU Political Science). Bring your lunch; we'll bring the soft drinks and snacks. Lincoln Hall 207.

πŸ• 6–7 p.m. β€” Constitution trivia night, focused this year on voting rights laws and constitutional amendments. Lincoln Hall 207.
