Rote memorization isn't the answer for flashcard fatigue. 🧠⚡

Struggling readers cannot easily memorize words as whole visual shapes. The brain locks words into long-term memory through a process called orthographic mapping. This means connecting the sounds we hear to the exact letters that make those sounds.
Stop practicing 50 flashcards a night. Take just 3 words, break down their individual sounds, point out the "heart parts" (irregular spellings), and build them physically.

Some days students seem to make giant leaps forward. Other days they need extra practice or review. That's a normal part of learning. Growth isn't always linear, but with patience and consistency, progress continues.

Why "Look at the picture and guess" is hurting struggling readers. 📉

Teaching children to guess forces them to rely on weak memory strategies instead of building the brain pathways required for permanent word recognition.
Cover the pictures if your child is guessing. Encourage them to look at every single letter from left to right and blend the sounds together.

Learning involves taking risks, making mistakes, and trying again. When students feel supported and encouraged, they're more willing to tackle challenges and grow from the experience.

Let’s bust the biggest myth about dyslexia. ❌👁️

Dyslexia is not a visual problem; it is a phonological processing issue. The brain struggles to break spoken words down into individual sounds and match those sounds to letters. Backward writing is actually a normal developmental stage for many young kids!
Instead of tracking exercises, children with dyslexia need explicit, systematic instruction in phonemic awareness—learning to hear and manipulate sounds in words.

Skip the reading quiz. Try this instead. 🧠💬

Instead of grilling your child on facts to check their understanding, ask about the "movie" in their head.

Ask questions like: "What do you picture the character looking like?" or "What does this scene feel like?" This builds deep visual comprehension naturally.

Students need encouragement just as much as they need instruction. Recognizing effort helps children feel seen, valued, and motivated to keep going—even when learning feels challenging.

How to tell if a book is "just right" for your reader. ✋

Have your child read one page of a book. Hold up a finger for every word they don't know. 1-2 words is easy; 3-4 is a great challenge.
If you hit 5 fingers, save that book to read to them instead of having them read it alone.
