Remote Sensing Postdoc Research Associate

Introduction
South Dakota State University EECS Imaging Processing Lab (IPLab) is seeking a Postdoc Research Associate to engage in actively funded research in the areas of radiometric, geometric, and spatial characterization with a focus on correction, calibration and validation of satellite and airborne imaging systems. The IP Lab actively works with state of the art on-orbit imaging sensors through funded research partnerships with NASA, USGS, DOD and with numerous commercial partners. The lab focuses its efforts on developing new and innovative methods of calibration and validation through ground field campaigns, in-situ instruments and a worldwide set of ground reference sites to address the evolving needs of new and upcoming space missions. Once these new methods are validated, they are then integrated into the operational evaluation of on-orbit sensors to implement routine characterization. As an IPLab Postdoc Research Associate, this position would be involved in supporting these activities and working with our partners in devising creative and new techniques for calibration and validation of radiometric optical imagery and applying them to operational sensors to validate or correct the data from these sensors.

We require a creative and innovative professional to join us in the SDSU Image Processing Lab. We are seeking someone with broad backgrounds in GIS, imaging remote sensing, and/or temporal signal processing. This individual must work well in group settings and have strong written and oral communications skills.

SDSU is especially interested in candidates that can contribute to the experiences of underrepresented minorities in organizations. Women, minorities, veterans, and people with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position will be responsible for working with other staff, through research and journal review, to come up with solutions to problems encountered in the world of radiometric calibration of remotely sensed image sensors. These solutions may involve either hardware or software. Most projects are software based and would be implemented via engineering level code (Matlab or Python) and subsequently validated using various ground truth data. Once the methodology is devised, the code is written, and the process validated, the researcher will use the new approach to operationally apply the process to other sensors. Often then the researcher develops or works with our sponsoring partners to produce a rigorous operational code. The candidate will also be responsible for presenting the results to the lab, to external sponsors, writing up the results into reports, and submitting and gaining acceptance of the new method through a peer reviewed journal paper.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Ph.D. in field related to optical imaging remote sensing or a closely related field such as Electrical Engineering or GIS completed by first day of employment;
• Demonstrated ability to work on open ended research problems via demonstrated research experience;
• Ability to develop engineering quality code in Matlab, Python, or relevant GIS packages for use in the evaluation of radiometric calibration/validation of imagery;
• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills;
• Demonstrated organizational and time management skills;
• Strong interpersonal skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• At least one year of experience related to GIS, Remote sensing, or optical imaging;
• Demonstrated experience with developing code in Matlab for work on GIS data;
• Experience in presenting results and methods in public and in peer reviewed journals.

• At least one year of experience in radiometric sensor calibration or related GIS application using remotely sensed optical imaging data;
• Demonstrated ability to work on open ended research problems via demonstrated research experience;
• Ability to develop engineering quality code in Matlab, Python, or relevant GIS packages for evaluation of radiometric calibration/validation of imagery;
• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills;
• Demonstrated organizational and time management skills;
• A valid driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire;
• Strong interpersonal skills.

As a LANDSAT CALIBRATION AND VALIDATION MANAGER within the EARTH RESOURCES OBSERVATION AND SCIENCE (EROS) CENTER, some of your specific duties will include:
• Prepares and presents project reviews to management personnel at EROS and USGS HQ, and to technical and management personnel in cooperating Federal agencies to present status on assigned or potential projects and related schedules. Includes briefings and reports for scientific, business, and systems-oriented hardware/software development efforts required for implementation of unique future Landsat Next and SCR calibration tools and systems.
• Serves as the ECCOE Calibration/Validation manager planning, managing and providing technical oversight to EROS calibration and validation activities focused primarily on the Landsat series of satellite missions. Collaborates with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center cal/val team on Landsat mission calibration and validation work on planned, active and decommissioned missions to ensure long term and standard calibration of Landsat data for land change applications.
• Supports Landsat operations by reviewing calibration plans, reviewing technical reports, and providing direction for continuing Landsat calibration into the future. Exercises personal experience, ability and professional technical judgement to propose, design, and plan projects to ensure the validity of Landsat Surface and Surface Temperature products, as well as improving interoperability among various sensors.
• Supports Landsat 9 and future Landsat missions potentially including super spectral and hyperspectral systems development by participating in instrument, spacecraft, and ground system reviews and technical interchange meetings.
