Working on having better conversations with your partner, or fighting less? Effective communication is key.

John Gottmans Method 'soft startup' technique can be a great method to use for effective communication. To apply this start conversations gently by avoiding criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling. Instead try using 'I' statements to express needs with clarity. Example if you want your partner to help with dishes instead of saying instead of saying something like you never do the dishes, I always do thedishes, you are so messy. Try using an I statment. I would love if you would hep me with the dishes tonight it would make me feel X. Or I would love if you expressed gratitude for when I do the dishes. Also try to encoperate active listening techniques, such as paraphrasing and validating.

When your partner shares something paraphrase and repeat back tot hem to show you understand what they saiud. Then take it to the next level by empathizing and valdaitong what they said. This will help them feel seen and heard and create a much closer connection from the conversation. Try incorporating these skills to see a noticeable shift in your connection.

Do you know your love langue? Do you know your partner’s? Gary Chapman’s book the 5 love languages highlights the 5 ways people express and experience love. Not everyone expresses or experiences love the same way. Knowing your partner's and your own love language can be a game-changer for your relationships.

The 5 Languages includes the following

Words of Affirmation: Some people feel loved through verbal expressions of appreciation, encouragement, and affection. Think warm compliments, sincere gratitude, appreciation, or compliments.

Acts of Service: For some actions speak louder than words. Doing things to lighten their load, like cooking dinner, fixing a leaky faucet, or running errands means more to people with this love language. Small gestures done out of love show you care. While everyone likes to be helped out, the difference here is they truly feel loved from these acts even more so than words or hugs.

Receiving Gifts: This isn't about materialism; it's about thoughtfulness. It more about the time spent choosing the gift or the thought in it like bringing home flowers.

Quality Time: Undivided attention is what people with this love language see as love. Deep conversations, shared adventures, or simply holding hands without distractions show you prioritize being present with them.

Physical Touch: Hugs, handholds, cuddles, and kisses speak volumes for those who thrive on physical connection. It's not just about passion; it's about showing affection and comfort through non-verbal touch.

Tips

1. Identify yours and your partner's primary love language. Take the quiz online or observe how you naturally express and receive love.

2. How you receive love and how you express it may not be the same. Remember that if your partner receives love differently from what is your natural way to express it, try to learn to show them love the way that resonates with them the most. Example if your primary way to show love is with gifts, but your partner needs quality time. Try to focus on taking time to be present with them without your phone and full attention on them. This will go a long way.

3. Be patient. Learning each other's language takes time and practice. Don't expect immediate change, but know it will come over time, and practice makes perfect.

4. You may have more than 1 love language, that’s okay. Express what you believe yours are to you partner and ask your partner to take the quiz online if you want to discover theirs.

By understanding your partners love language and showing them yours, you can find hacks to create more connection with each other in a way that’s meaningful to each other.

Comment what is you love language, what is your partners?

Don't treat others how you want to be treated, treat them how they want to be treated.

Not everyone has the same love language or needs. Knowing your partners love language and needs can really help. Also just asking them. What you may need or want from your partner to feel loved may be different form what they need/want.

COACHING IS A SKILL💡One of my mentors says, if your clients aren’t getting results, it’s your fault (paraphrased).

I see a lot of coaches writing off clients who “refuse to do the work” or “just don’t follow the plan.” They’ll use the mantra: you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink🤷🏻‍♀️

And while there’s certainly no way we can be in our clients homes monitoring their behaviors 24/7, I do believe that if you’re a coach and your client “isn’t doing the program,” it’s your job to figure out why and facilitate another plan of action for them. If they’re dodging you or don’t feel comfy sharing their struggles, it’s your job to create a better environment for them to feel safe to share.

Besides, that’s what coaching is.

Coaching isn’t giving a meal plan or macro count. It’s not creating a workout program, or answering emails. Writing off a client who can’t stick to the plan or telling them to “just try harder” is lazy af coaching.

It’s your job as the coach, to uh, *coach* them to success—via troubleshooting, ongoing strategy, taking into consideration your client’s preferences and schedule and psychological tendencies and unique metabolic makeup.

My belief is that anyone can change.

And a coach can be the guide, the facilitator of that change if they’re willing enough to get their hands dirty. To do the work of asking questions, helping the client uncover limiting beliefs or creating a strategy that will work for them, specifically, versus just trying to slot everyone in to your protocol.

It can be frustrating when your clients aren’t compliant or they’re not getting the results they want.

But don’t take it personally. But DO take it very seriously.

Your clients’ noncompliance isn’t bc they don’t like you or want it. It’s not personal, so don’t get frustrated. Instead, get inquisitive. Get innovative. Put your investigator hat on and get to work🕵🏻‍♀️Your clients need you🙌
