The winner of our first summer photo contest… 📸

Andrew Evans ’27!

“I spent my study abroad year living in Osaka, Japan, and this photo was taken in Uji, which is known for its matcha. The camera I used to take this photo was actually found in the junk bin of a secondhand store and cost the equivalent of about $5. I had to go out of my way to find film for it and then find a place to get the film developed, which made taking the photo feel even more special.

Living abroad changed me a lot. One of the biggest things I took away from my time abroad was to never say no to an adventure or an opportunity to do something new. I traveled all over Japan and also had the chance to visit Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Philippines. Some of my favorite memories came from random plans or small outings that I almost didn’t go to, and those ended up becoming some of the moments I remember most. I became more confident and much more willing to put myself out there and try new things. I came back to Sarah Lawrence with a much bigger sense of adventure, and I’m always looking for the next place to go or something new to experience.”

💼 INTERN SPOTLIGHT: Katya Thalwitz ’28

Katya is a rising junior studying Arts Administration. Over the summer, she had the opportunity to intern in Los Angeles at OPE Partners, a talent management and entertainment production company, through our Internships for All program.

As a Development Intern, Katya completed script coverage for ten feature films, four pilot episodes, two books, and a comedy show. She credits a film producing class taught by two-time Sundance-winner Professor Heather Winters with preparing her to pitch ideas in a company-wide presentation.

Thanks to the Gryphon Grant program, donors can help offset costs for unpaid or low-paid internships by providing summer funding. As a recipient of this award, Katya’s experience “would not have been possible without their generosity!”

College-level science for high school students, right on the Hudson River 🐟

Taught by experienced scientists and researchers, SLC’s Hudson River Ecology Course gives high school students a week of hands-on science, where the Hudson River becomes the classroom!

From sediment surveying to plankton collection to fish identification and more, students gain insight into various environmental-oriented careers and are eligible to earn one college credit upon program completion. Learn more at Sarah Lawrence College Center for the Urban River at Beczak!

Some highlights from Writers Week 2026! ✍️

Every summer, SLC’s Writing Institute welcomes creative high school students for an immersive week of creative writing and the performing arts. This summer, the Institute brought together 204 students from 30 states and 5 countries for 100 hours of writing, creating, learning, and building connections!

Throughout the week, students attend writing and theatre workshops led by prose writers, poets, and performance artists. Rooted in the SLC tradition of one-on-one interaction, the program offers students the opportunity to meet in small groups with workshop leaders. Participants are also eligible to earn one college credit through this program, providing them with the opportunity to deepen their creative practice while experiencing the academic rigor of a college-level course!

“I loved how my writing instructors brought me out of my comfort zone yet still helped make me feel safe in this environment. I got to experiment with a lot of genres, share my own writing, and become inspired by hearing my peers' work.”

💼 INTERN SPOTLIGHT: Alex Knaggs

Alex Knaggs is a rising junior studying sociology and community engagement. This summer, she participated in the Community Leadership Intern Program (CLIP) through an internship at We Art One Artist Collective.

From assisting at various teen programs to conducting grant research, Alex's internship taught her the behind-the-scenes of running a nonprofit and gave her a better idea of what working in a community serving organization looks like!

Experiences like this allow Sarah Lawrence students to turn their passions into purpose, gaining hands-on experience while making a meaningful impact beyond the classroom.
