Ever notice how you can know you’re safe, but your shoulders are still up to your ears and your chest feels tight? That is because stress isn't just a thought—it lives in your nervous system and muscle memory.
When we transition from a chaotic school day or a hectic family routine, our bodies often stay locked in "high-alert" mode. To fully reset, you have to physically let it go.
My students love to shake first thing in the morning, followed by a 4-7-8 break. We also do it before tests!
The 1-Minute Reset Routine:
The Body Scan: Close your eyes for 5 seconds. Where are you gripping? Is it your jaw? Your shoulders? Your stomach?
The Neuro-Somatic Shake: Stand up and literally shake it out. Bounce on your heels, shake your hands, flip your wrists, and let your torso loosen up.
The Audible Release: As you shake, let out a low, vocalized sigh ("ahhhh").
Why it works: Animals in the wild naturally shake their bodies after surviving a threat to discharge the excess adrenaline and stress hormones. Shaking breaks up physical tension patterns, re-engages your somatic awareness, and signals to your brain that the "threat" has passed, effectively bridging the gap between your emotional regulation and physical body.
