Final photo dump of the year for Science Room #1!
1) Physics students finished up the year by building model rockets to launch outside on a very windy day (we lost a few but most were recovered!). See “before the launch” pics in the classroom.
2) Biomedical Science students completed their study of the heart by dissecting a sheep heart. Most said it was their favorite lab of the year. Lots of photos attached.
3) Medical Interventions students completed the year by learning how to suture (or make stitches) on fake skin, which some liked & some didn’t. They also had to suture two balloons together & test if these would hold water, but none actually did lol. More photos attached.
4) Included are pics with a few seniors, the senior Biomedical Completers, this year’s newest group of Biomedical Completers, and finally the academic award winners from all of my classes.

Proud to recognize another group of ICC STEM High School students—the latest Biomedical Completers! These 6 juniors & 1 senior recently finished the third class, Medical Interventions, to receive their monogrammed lab coats! They will receive their medals at graduation. Congrats to Whitley Smith (Senior), Delilah Montalbo, Teagan Burrow, Kennedy Manecke, Makaelynn Wood, Eli Walters, & Tyler Anderson.

Very proud of this group of Biomedical Completers! These are our 2026 ICC STEM HS Graduates who completed their Biomedical Sciences program. This group includes Matthew Thielemier, Mercedes Woodward, Whitley Smith, Devan Reed, Mackensie Robbins, Dayka Lock, & Allison Hatman (separate picture). I’ve included a few other shots of this group in caps & gowns. Congratulations!!

Recent laboratory & project activities happening in Science Room #1–
1) Physics students constructed catapults to launch mini-marshmallows, using various materials. All were successful! Our next project will involve building model rockets.
2) Medical Interventions students participated in a lab activity involving E.coli or “superbugs”. This lab required students to be very diligent, including bleaching countertops before and after transferring bacteria onto agar plates. Our next topic will be the study of cancer.
3) Principles of Biomedical Science students wrapped up their study of diabetes by studying osmosis of eggs. After the shell was removed with vinegar, students were able to track movement of water inside & outside the “shell”, similar to the cell membrane. Our next topic will be genetics.
4) Human Body Systems students studied the digestive system by adding clay organs to their mannequin models. They also constructed models of the respiratory system by using plastic bottles and other household materials. The next topic will be the urinary system.
5) AP Biology students culminated their study of energy by completing labs on photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Their first lab involved finding the Rf values of various pigments in spinach leaves using paper chromatography. Their second lab compared the rate of cellular respiration in germinating vs dry peas in room temperature vs freezing temps. Our next topics will be cell division, cancer, & genetics.

Recent laboratory & project activities happening in Science Room #1–
1) Physics students constructed an apparatus to withstand the Egg Drop…with different degrees of success lol!
2) Medical Interventions did their final dissection of the three Biomedical courses—a fetal pig! Some students liked this activity better than others! They will be working on the “superbug” lab next.
3) Principles of Biomedical Science students worked in groups to construct a working 3-D model of the insulin-glucose process in normal cells as well as Type 1 & Type 2 diabetes, then presented each model to the class. They all did great! They will continue this study with a discussion of the various complications of diabetes.
4) Human Body Systems students continued their study of the eye with a sheep eye dissection. The next activity will be vision tests.

Update from Science Room #1…
AP Biology students created their edible animal cell models—which were both well done & tasty! See attached pics…
Principles of Biomedical Students kicked off the new quarter with a lab where they built models of DNA. This will coincide with our crime scene again, as we study DNA analysis next. Enjoy the pics!

Here’s some pictures of recent STEM lab activities happening in Room #1…

Biomedical Science students recently planned & carried out a blood spatter analysis lab, where they investigated how blood drops have different diameters from different heights. This information was used to decide the height that our crime scene victim, Anna Garcia, started bleeding.

Human Body Systems students conducted a bone detectives lab this week, where they measured & described various bones to determine gender, race, height, and age of an unknown set of bones. They had a few surprises!

Physics students just finished an engineering challenge where their task was to design and build a self-propelled car. Grades were based on the car’s performance in categories based on distance, speed, mass, and momentum. All students worked very hard, and did a great job!
