Coming across offensive remarks on social media can do lots of emotional damage to marginalized groups, whether it’s just saying slurs or talking down another person of the group based on their generalized characteristics. Solutions to these issues include balancing free speech and censorship through media platforms, or “threading the needle” between the two, electing political leaders who are against the issue, calling out individuals who’ve committed the act of hate speech and having educational conversations to build empathy within the individual, and publicizing non-profit organizations on the issue. Though according to three experts on the issue of hate speech, there are some limitations to the solutions listed.
