"How to break the sugar habit and help your health in the process"
http://www.health.harvard.edu/newsletters/Harvard_Womens_Health_Watch/2013/July/how-to-break-the-sugar-habit-and-help-your-health-in-the-process

Eating too much sugar contributes to obesity, heart disease, and an increased risk for death. Sugar is sometimes hard to spot, because it is often hidden in unexpected foods, such as ketchup and salad dressing. Cutting back on sugar can help control appetite and cravings for heavily sweetened foods.

Looking forward to a great day hiking tomorrow- come join us!

We will hike on Tuesday, October 15 at Bull Run Mountains Natural Area beginning at 10 am.

7 mile hike past some interesting mill ruins and graveyards to explore, out to an amazing overlook. The tread is pretty smooth and easy. There is one long climb up to the beautiful view.

The address of the park is Bull Run Mountains Conservancy, 17405 Beverley Mill Drive, Broad Run, VA 20137
Directions from the city- go out Route 66 West to Exit 40 for Route 15 towards Haymarket. Turn left onto 15, take your first right onto Route 55 John Marshall Hwy. Go about 2 1/2 miles, cross the railroad tracks, then turn right onto Turner Road. Take the first left onto Beverly Mill Drive. Take this road all the way to the end (you will pass a sign for Bull RunMountains- keep going 1/2 mile or so, and you will see parking spaces on the left.)

Serendipity! The stable we were supposed to ride with had some trouble at the last minute, so Will at Double H Stable in Front Royal was kind enough to give us a great ride with little notice. We had a wonderful time walking and trotting up and down hills, across streams, and through the woods- great day!

Great article Emily shared on our hike yesterday. Does weight loss advice from 1920 still hold up today?

By Lauren Gelman for Reader's Digest Published in the very first issue of Reader's Digest magazine, the article "How to Regulate Your Weight" is full of diet tips that are surprisingly forward-thinking -- along with others that are woefully outdated.

Possible change in tomorrow's outing:
If the government is shut down, the park will be closed, and we aren't allowed to do any volunteer activities (the bike loans) so if the gov't is shut down, we will hike at nearby
Blockhouse Point Park 14750 River Road, Darnestown, MD

We will meet in the large gravel parking lot, which has a kiosk.

Join us for a scenic bike ride on the C & O Canal towpath. BIke loans are available through the NPS bike loaner program. Please let me know by Monday at noon if you'd like to borrow a bike.

We will bike downstream towards Georgetown. We will decide the distance based on the desires/experience of the group, and might be able to work out two options if the group is split on desired distance.) We will head downstream past Carderock, Little Falls and Fletchers Cove.

We will meet at the Great Falls Tavern on the Maryland side at 10. (If you are borrowing a bike, please arrive at 9:45. As you walk from the parking lot, go towards the tavern, then turn left. There is a small building where the bike loan program is housed. We will be outside that building.

Looking forward to a great ride!
