Outstanding Student Spotlight!
Cassie Lane graduated this spring with a double major in Chemistry and Math with a minor in Biology. She won 3rd place in the undergraduate poster session at the 2026 annual Society of Toxicology meeting. She presented her Mathematics work at the Mathematical Association of America alongside world famous King professor Andy Simonson (this work will be soon published). She presented her Chemistry work at the annual ACS meeting. She was a leader of the STEM club, robotics team, was a teaching assistant and tutored many subjects for her peers.
This amazing young woman will be sent with love to the U of Nebraska this fall where she will pursue her PhD. We are so proud of her and will miss her so much! Lab rats rule!

Super proud of 2 rising juniors, Clay Sherfey and Maggie Worley who have won the Appalachian College Associations' esteemed Ledford Grant. Their research with C.elegans and sweeteners will be funded through the summer and fall of 2026.

The ACA is a non-profit consortium of 33 private four-year liberal arts institutions located in the Appalachian region.

They also received awards to travel to the Spring 2026 SOT conference in San Diego where they won a competitive grant to participate in the Undergraduate Development Program.

The Vaughan Worm lab took the show on the road to West Ridge High School for some end of the year Biology fun!
The students were able to learn about C. Elegans neurology by making observations of the worms' response to everyday food products.
Recent grads Cassie Lane and Aleya Ebner introduced their research work and taught students techniques used in the lab.
Special thanks to the ACS Science Coaching program that sponsored the partnership between educators Lori Ensor and Tracy Dishner for 25-26 school year
