YWCA NETN and SWVA TechGYRLS TechGYRLS helps develop social, emotional, and cognitive development skills for at-risk girls.

The YWCA TechGYRLS after-school program is a FREE “girls-only” environment, specifically designed to broaden a girl’s technical knowledge. We help participants develop the confidence to use technology tools, discover links between enjoyable technology projects and STEM subjects, and enhance their critical thinking skills. The girls are encouraged to construct, design, produce, animate, analyze, integrate, visualize and explore. The overall goal of this program is to make a dramatic & significant impact on at-risk girls ages 9 -15 who’s access to, and experience with, technology software would otherwise be severely limited. The program provides participants the academic support required for school success by fostering foundations for learning, confidence, persistence, organization, teamwork, and socialization. Girls gain confidence using technology tools though every activity, even if it's just doing homework. Activities include the TechGYRL curriculum, homework/tutoring assistance, mentoring, job-shadowing, nutritional snacks and physical education. Girls are selected for the program based on recommendations from their school counselors.

On October 8, TechGYRLS participated in Arm and Hammer's Baking Soda Rocket Day!

Students worked with Ms. Alison to decorate/assemble their rockets and measure out supplies. Like true scientists, they learned through trial and error; some may have even gone home smelling a little like vinegar! After some tweaks, TechGYRLS worked together to finally see their rockets launch.

A lot of laughs and smiles were shared through this activity, all while learning about chemical reactions! We strongly recommend you try this fun activity at home. Let us know if you decide to; we'll post a link in the comments for anyone interested in the instructions. Happy launching!!

If you stop by the YWCA on a Thursday afternoon and think you're hearing soldiers prepping to march into battle, don't worry! It's just TechGYRLS learning bucket drumming with Ms. Cara from Symphony of the Mountains (Official) !

Our students got to take turns playing a snare drum and got their hands on their customized drum sticks to go with their customized buckets. They spent the rest of the lesson learning to drum Spooky Scary Skeletons, which is the perfect song to kick off spooky season.

These gals are so excited to learn a new skill, and we are thankful to SOTM for their continuous support and provided opportunities for our TechGYRLS.

Happy fall, y'all!

Over the summer, TechGYRLS worked with community volunteer, Ms. Dona, to refresh our garden! Our students worked hard to w**d out the old, refresh the soil, and plant new seeds that would grow over the summer.

We recently got to harvest some of what we planted a few months ago, the most exciting being our pumpkins! It was a great way to welcome in the new season. There will certainly be more to come, and we can definitely say it is incredibly rewarding seeing what hard work and dedication can produce (no pun intended)!

Symphony of the Mountains (Official) is once again bringing music to our TechGYRLS program! With buckets? Yes, with buckets!

Ms. Cara is teaching our students percussion this year using buckets (donated by Lowe's). From just the first meeting, we can tell the girls are SO excited for this new musical adventure.

Thank you, SOTM, for always finding ways to make musical education fun and engaging!

Choir is back at TechGYRLS! We were so excited to see Ms. Jane from Mountain Empire Children's Choral Academy again. Our students are already working hard to learn new music and prepare for their concert this Christmas. We are so thankful to community partners like MECCA that allow our students to express themselves and step outside of their comfort zones; it's going to be a great year! 🎵

👉🏻👉🏻We Need Your Help!👈🏻👈🏻

Our YWCA NETN and SWVA TechGYRLS have planned out a fantastic list of summer outings and are in need of the funds to implement them! Would you consider donating to help them enjoy these activities? 🙏🏻

We've posted here the cost per outing for the planned field trips. Take a look and see what you might like to support. You don't have to donate the full amount for a trip (unless you want to!). Any amount will be helpful and and will go toward creating not only excellent learning opportunities but wonderful memories these gyrls will hold for a lifetime! 🥰

We're grateful for your assistance!
