Using the Orton Gillingham method, students will receive one-on-one private tutoring. Each lesson will specifically target weaknesses and use multisensory activities to help your child improve their reading level. Orton Gillingham was created to teach students with dyslexia and can also be used with struggling readers.

Orton-Gillingham (OG) Tutoring includes:

Forty-five minutes of a customized, prescriptive lesson to teach literacy in a direct, explicit, multi-sensory, structured, and sequential format. OG is intended for all students, and especially when reading, spelling, and writing does not come easily. There is a tremendous focus on phonemic awareness training and orthographic mapping so the student can achieve instant, automatic word reading ability.

Not all slides are fun. The summer slide in education is referring to the loss of skills over the summer. On average, students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in math and reading over the summer months and in September, teachers typically spend between 4 to 6 weeks re-teaching material students have forgotten over the summer.

Things you can do over the summer are encourage your child to read 20 minutes every day. Public libraries are great resources for summer reading lists by age/grade level, and they often offer reading programs.
Also read to your child to build listening skills, engage the imagination, and increase vocabulary.

Summer is right around the corner and kids are thinking beach, pools, and play dates. Don't forget about tutoring!

Students typically regress over summer vacation and teachers in September spend the beginning of the year reteaching skills that were taught over the spring.

One of the main goals of the preschool and kindergarten years should be to have every child develop strong phonemic awareness skills and to master letter-sound identification.
One simple way to do this is have your child practice using shaving cream. Have them write the letter while naming the letter, a key word, and the sound.
