📖 Some stories remind us why dreams matter.

Godwin Ishaku is one of those stories.

As a young boy in Borno State, Nigeria, Godwin was displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency. He eventually found refuge at Home for the Needy Foundation in Benin City, where he continued his education and completed secondary school.

Today, he is a Medical Student at the University of Benin and a Wells Mountain Initiative scholar.

And now, his story has become part of something even bigger.

Godwin is one of 12 co-authors of Dream Plan Do, a book written with WMI Founder Tom Wells and launched during the Dream Big Conference in Nairobi, Kenya this year.

In the book, Godwin shares part of his journey — a story of displacement, opportunity, education, and the determination to keep moving forward.

This week, Godwin received his copies of the book in Nigeria. 📚🇳🇬

There is something special about seeing a young person who once had to rebuild his life now holding a book that carries his own story.

At Wells Mountain Initiative, we believe education can open doors. But the stories of our scholars remind us that what happens after that door opens can be just as powerful.

You can help make more stories possible! https://secure.qgiv.com/for/wellsmountaininitiative/

🌍 Happy World Team Day!

There’s something special about being together, and even more special about sharing moments of wonder along the way.

Before gathering for WMI’s Dream Big Conference in Nairobi, our team had the joy of visiting the incredible Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. 🐘

From different countries and backgrounds, we come together around one shared purpose: supporting young leaders who are creating change in their communities and around the world.

Here’s to the people who make the work so meaningful. 💚

🕊️ This International Day of Peace, we’re celebrating a life dedicated to peace and justice.

Felix Manzi, a 2019 WMI Alum from Rwanda, grew up experiencing the challenges of displacement and discrimination. Those experiences inspired his dream of becoming a lawyer focused on human rights and social justice.

With support from WMI, Felix earned his law degree and went on to become a Youth Ambassador for the Peace Education Initiative Rwanda, contribute to the African Union Commission on International Law, pursue advanced studies in international law, and serve as a keynote speaker at the Greater Kansas City Peacebuilding Conference.

This International Day of Peace, help us invest in more young leaders like Felix. Your generosity can help turn education into leadership, service, and lasting change. 💙

🌟 Celebrating Dr. Daniel Femi: A WMI Founder’s Award Recipient

At Wells Mountain Initiative, we celebrate scholars and alumni who take their opportunities and turn them into meaningful change for others. The WMI Founder’s Award recognizes those who go beyond expectations and demonstrate exceptional leadership, service, and community impact.

At our recent Dream Big Conference in Nairobi, our founders presented this special honor to Dr. Daniel Femi of Nigeria. 🇳🇬

A trained optometrist and social impact leader, Daniel is using his education and expertise to address a critical challenge: access to quality eye care for people in rural and underserved communities.

Through his Rural iCARE Programme, launched with support from a WMI Seed Grant, Daniel and his team reached 1,866 people in its first year, providing:

👁️ Free vision screenings
👓 991 reading glasses distributed
🏥 Sight-restoring cataract and pterygium surgeries for underserved patients

Building on this impact, Daniel secured a WMI Growth Grant to expand the programme and reach even more people with essential eye-care services.

But Daniel’s impact extends beyond his clinical work. From serving in WMI leadership and scholar initiatives to winning the 2024 WMI Online Academy Pitch Competition, he has consistently used his skills, platforms, and opportunities to serve others and strengthen the WMI community.

Congratulations, Dr. Daniel Femi, on this well-deserved recognition! We are proud to celebrate the lives you are touching and the vision you are helping communities see more clearly; both literally and figuratively. 💙

🌟 Celebrating Precious Mhlanga, 2021 WMI Alum from Eswatini 🌟

Raised by a single mother and inspired by values of perseverance and service, Precious earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and Financial Reporting from Botho University and later an MBA in Leadership and Strategy from AFRICA RESEARCH UNIVERSITY (ARU), LUSAKA- ZAMBIA. Today, she serves as a Finance Officer at Cheshire Homes of Eswatini, where she helps strengthen programs that support people with disabilities.

Driven by her belief that every young person deserves the chance to succeed, Precious founded the Sisonkhe Youth Empowerment Initiative, a nonprofit dedicated to connecting young people with educational opportunities, mentorship, and personal development resources. As an active leader within WMI's Educate Your Own (EYO) program, she continues to invest in the next generation of changemakers.

In 2025, Precious earned third place in the WMI Academy Pitch Competition and used her award funding to organize a youth career-readiness workshop focused on resume writing, job applications, and interview preparation. The event was met with enthusiastic participation and positive feedback from attendees.

Through her leadership, advocacy, and commitment to empowering others, Precious embodies the spirit of service and community impact that defines the WMI network.

Thank you for your steadfast commitment to excellence and community service, Precious! 💙

🌟 Celebrating Caroline Isinge: A WMI Founder’s Award Recipient

At Wells Mountain Initiative, we believe that true leadership goes beyond personal achievement. Each year, the WMI Founder’s Award recognizes scholars and alumni who go above and beyond expectations and use their knowledge, opportunities, and leadership to create meaningful change in their communities and beyond.

At our recent Dream Big Conference in Nairobi, our founders presented this special honor to Caroline Viola Isinge of Uganda. 🇺🇬

As an entrepreneur, financial consultant, and social impact leader, Caroline has turned her WMI journey into a platform for empowering others. Through her organization, VIISCA Adonai Consults Limited, she is advancing financial literacy, business development, and access to financing for underserved communities.

With support from WMI Seed and Growth Grants, her work has already:

🌿 Trained 300+ people in financial literacy and business skills
🌿 Supported 150+ youth, women, and persons with disabilities through consultancy and micro-lending
🌿 Contributed to the creation of 50 new jobs
🌿 Helped small businesses grow and build more sustainable livelihoods in Mbale City

Caroline’s story reminds us of why we invest in young leaders: when one person is empowered with knowledge and opportunity, they can go on to empower many others.

Congratulations, Caroline, on this well-deserved recognition! We are proud to celebrate the impact you are creating and the many lives you are helping to move forward. 💙

🌟 Bringing Life-Saving Mental Health Services to Nigeria 🌟

When Dr. Phinuella Okunamiri was born, her family wasn't sure she would survive. Growing up in a large family facing financial hardship in Nigeria, she experienced firsthand the challenges that come with poverty, uncertainty, and limited access to opportunity. Yet even as a young student, she dreamed of becoming a doctor and using her life to serve others.

She was awarded a WMI scholarship in 2013, went on to earn her medical degree from the University of Ibadan, and is now a Senior Registrar in Psychiatry at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Lagos. Along the way, she distinguished herself as one of West Africa's top psychiatry trainees, earning the George Eze Prize and Egarton Luke Prize for outstanding performance in her membership examinations.

Passionate about demystifying the stigma surrounding mental health, Phinuella launched Well-Mind Naija through a WMI Community Development Grant. Using accessible video training, the initiative helps families better understand mental illness and supports caregivers facing burnout.

Beyond her medical work, Phinuella has served as WMI's West Africa Regional Coordinator, led the Nigeria Fellowship, participated in the WMI Academy, and continues to mentor and inspire fellow scholars.

Now, as he steps into this new chapter, James is looking forward to using the knowledge and skills he has gained to drive positive change in his community.

We’re proud to celebrate James and the impact he will continue to create. 💙
