In the United States, an estimated 1.6 million domestic violence-related traumatic brain injuries occur each year.

However, for many survivors of abuse, a beloved pet is the reason they stay in an unsafe home.

During Domestic Abuse Awareness Month in October, the nonprofit organization Women Against Abuse https://www.womenagainstabuse.org/ is offerering FREE webinar on IPV and Pets to help protect survivors and their pets.

Their educators are offering a session in English and in Spanish, and will teach you:

🐕 Tactics of control and abuse involving pets
🐠 Safety planning for survivors and pets

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month—a time to stand with survivors, raise awareness, and recognize the often-hidden effects of abuse.

One IMPORTANT connection that deserves more attention: domestic violence can cause traumatic brain injury (TBI). Strikes to the head, being shaken, strangulation, or being violently thrown against a surface can all result in brain injury. Yet brain injuries among survivors are often under-recognized and under-treated.

Symptoms of a traumatic brain injury may include headaches, dizziness, memory or concentration problems, fatigue, sleep changes, anxiety, mood changes, or feeling “not like yourself.” A survivor may not realize these symptoms are related to a brain injury—or may not feel safe seeking care.

If you or someone you know has experienced domestic violence, you are not alone. Help is available.
