Dear Brighton Family,

Have you ever wondered what we’re working on, how we’re improving, and what the District’s goals are? We are very focused on continuously growing, improving, and adapting to meet the ever-changing needs of our students, families, and community. We are also an aligned, strategic, and goal-oriented organization that updates its plans, measures its progress, and commits to doing the work that supports everyone in meeting its annual goals.

To accomplish this, each year the District convenes a large group of parents, community members, staff members, the leadership team, and the Board of Education to develop our strategic plan for the year. Otherwise known as the Blueprint, this planning process is the backbone of every committee and District initiative for the year. The work done is reported out on regularly at Board of Education meetings, measured in final reporting, and then serves as the foundation for planning during the next year. This year’s Blueprint was developed with nearly 50 team members and further refined by the leadership team before being adopted by the Board of Education.

This year’s priority areas and goals are listed below:

Mental Health, Wellness, and Student Support
Goal: BCSD will support the whole child through inclusive environments, comprehensive support services, equitable access, and strong partnerships that enable every student to thrive.

Academic Excellence
Goal: BCSD will engage each student with challenging, culturally responsive coursework that develops community, collaboration, critical thinking, nurtures resiliency and a growth mindset, celebrates differences, and cultivates curiosity and joy in learning.

The Family and Student Experience
Goal: BCSD will foster an environment where each student and family are seen, heard, valued, and have a sense of belonging. We value our partnership with families and encourage engagement to support all students' needs and access to opportunities.

Operations
Goal: BCSD will develop and continually improve integrated systems that promote a safe, responsive, and future-ready educational environment.

Within each goal, a variety of action steps are also developed. The entire plan, along with one-page overviews of the work for each program and department, is available on our website: www.bcsd.org/blueprint

Have a great rest of your summer!

Kevin

Brighton Central School District Superintendent Dr. Kevin McGowan has announced the selection of Alaina Smith as the new Twelve Corners Middle School Assistant Principal.

“Alaina Smith joins the outstanding team at TCMS having demonstrated great success as a leader in her previous positions,” Dr. McGowan said. “Alaina was impressive in terms of her qualifications and experience, but even more so as a person. Her enthusiasm and energy, paired with her intellect and experience, will undoubtedly make a positive impact on the students, staff, and families that she works with. Welcome!”

Ms. Smith has served as the Elementary Principal in Bloomfield Central School District since 2023. Prior to that, she was an Elementary Assistant Principal, Instructional Technology Coach, and teacher in the Phelps-Clifton Springs Central School District.

“We are thrilled to welcome Alaina to Twelve Corners Middle School,” TCMS Principal Dr. Danielle Edmunds said. “An experienced administrator, she brings a student-centered approach, strong expertise in literacy, and a collaborative leadership style. We are confident that her experience and passion will have a positive impact on the entire TCMS community.”

Ms. Smith earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from the State University of New York at Geneseo, a Master of Science in Education and K-12 Reading Specialist from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration from the State University of New York at Oswego. She played soccer at Geneseo and coached girls soccer and softball at Midlakes High School.

She is grateful to be part of a very loving, tight-knit family and has two daughters, Charlotte and Sydney.

“I am honored and excited to join the Brighton Central School District as an Assistant Principal at Twelve Corners Middle School,” Ms. Smith said. “Middle school is a time of tremendous growth, discovery, and possibility. I look forward to partnering with teachers, staff, students, and families to support each student’s unique journey as both a learner and a person, ensuring all students feel valued, challenged, and supported. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a school community where strong relationships, high expectations, and a shared commitment to student success empower every learner to thrive.”

Ms. Smith has already begun working with the leadership team to ensure a smooth transition. She will officially begin her duties at TCMS on Aug. 24.

Tuned In, one of our Brighton Summer Arts camps, is wrapping up its second week! In this vocal and instrumental music offering, students have incorporated the acclaimed Orff-Schulwerk methodology into their creative music making through collaborative play, classroom instruments, folk dancing, movement, homemade instruments, storytelling, ukuleles, xylophones, drums, and much more!
The Habits of Mind also guided our musicianship, and many campers will take “responsible risks” in a Talent Show at the end of our camp.

Tuned In included students from four school districts entering grades 2-6 and was led by Council Rock Music Teacher Ms. Jill Davis.
