Low voltage faults and electrical diagnostic are the starting point of at least 75% of problem calls in my experience. Unless the cause of a problem is obvious your usually going to have to start off investigating with your meter.

The fastest way to understand electrical circuits and troubleshooting isn't from a PowerPoint lecture or from reading a book its by grabbing some wires and parts and learning hands on.

This photo is from our GS-102 class last year of the students starting with wiring boards prior to learning hopscotch troubleshooting on gas furnaces.
Even though the course is named GS-102 Gas furnace Service, its not just for the HVAC trade since its a very practical hands on course on electrical troubleshooting and low voltage diagnostic.
We get all different trades taking this class to sharpen their diagnostic skills. Including electricians, building engineers, Data and security, for example most of the people in this picture are boiler technicians

Its been a minute since I've posted on the school's social media. Since we have a small staff at the HVAC School sometimes the social media posts get left on the back burner when we get busy.
Here are some students from the previous ACHP-106 class getting ready to take measurements and run service calls on a trainer that was recently charged by their classmates.

Learning how to braze copper refrigerant pipes can be an intimidating task to learn in the field. As part of our ACHP-106/RS-103 classes we have brazing benches set up so students can learn how to confidently and comfortably braze. This way they can make all the mistakes in class and not out in the field.

Students taking voltage measurements on a AC system as part of running a service call. We build our trainers out of up-cycled equipment so students can get experience working on real units they’ll see in the field.

Students learning how to recover refrigerant by actually doing it on real working equipment. All practices are taught to epa 608 standards to ensure efficiency and good habits. Second slide shows heat being added to the compressor to help with the recovery and flash off any refrigerant that could have migrated into the oil. This is part of the ACHP-106 and RS-103 courses
