You can work on your skating, shooting, and stickhandling all day — but if you don’t develop your mental game, you won’t be your best at anything.
Earlier this week, in honor of National Girls & Women in Sports Day, I had the absolute joy of talking hockey + life with New York Sirens forward Savannah Norcross and the girls from the Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education program — and the biggest message was simple:
There is no “right” path. There is your path. And your mind is so much more impactful than you think, and you can use it to help pave the way that’s right for you.
I shared a little of my own journey:
➡️ I didn’t start playing ice hockey until I was 17
➡️ Played pro hockey as a 36-year-old rookie
➡️ Learned (the hard way) that mindset + hockey IQ can be just as important as skills
Savannah dropped gems too:
✨ You can grow into your next chapter — even if you can’t name it yet
✨ Mentorship matters more than you realize (you never know who you’ll impact)
✨ You are so much more than a hockey player
And I loved hearing the girls’ stories — from coaches who built their confidence to tough coaching moments that still taught resilience.
If you’re a girl in sports (or raising one), let this be your reminder:
Keep going. Stay curious. Ask for help. Trust the process.
What’s ONE thing sports has taught you that you’ll carry for life?
