SCVTHS Dance Program Presents “Elementra”
- The Gifted and Talented Honors Dance Department at Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School (SCVTHS), will present “Elementra,” a student-choreographed dance concert. The shows will take place on April 4th and 5th at 7:30PM in the school’s auditorium.
“Elementra” creates another world, where the elements – water, air, fire, earth, and metal – are engaged in a constant struggle. As the show progresses, the elements, which have been destroying their world, begin to unite and work together. Each element has its own dance, choreographed by Emily Watermasysk of Warren, Abigail Stone of Hillsborough, Saige Shoudt of Frenchtown, Lilah Mason of Flemington, and Gillian Conk of Flemington, all seniors in the Dance program. In addition, there are transitions that link each of the Elementra segments together that were choreographed by juniors Michaela Cabales of Phillipsburg and Kacey Cupit of Green Brook and sophomores Samantha Lazovick of Branchburg, Marisa Scott of Bridgewater, and Sierra Martin of Flemington.
Since each choreographer worked independently on their piece of the show, they did not know exactly what the other dances looked like. The first time they saw each other’s work was at a tech rehearsal held two weeks before the show. “Hearing all the music together, seeing everybody dancing together, and also working on the closing and the big opening definitely showed us how a lot of the movement was coming together” said Ms.Watermasysk.
The choreographers are eager to share the performances they have created. Ms. Conk, speaking for the group, said they hope the audience will walk away from the show with an understanding that in our world, as in their artistic vision of “Elementra,” “to have peace everything needs to work together and that nothing's going to get accomplished with everyone against each other.”
Tickets are available on the night of each show at the entrance to the SCVTHS Auditorium, located at 14 Vogt Drive, Bridgewater. Admission is $15.
