We had a great night at the ballpark! LVSC students, volunteers, staff, and families enjoyed an evening together cheering on the Somerset Patriots and sharing America’s pastime. A special thank you to the Somerset County, NJ Commissioners for donating the community box to nonprofits like LVSC and for making special events like this possible.

Meet LVSC's 2026 Student of the Year - Alejo! A musician from Paraguay, Alejo came to LVSC in fall 2023. Paired with tutor Christopher Yen, he worked to strengthen his English so he could grow his career. Early on, Alejo felt frustrated that he couldn’t fully “be himself” in English. Through focused lessons and hard work, Alejo gained confidence, reached important milestones, and found new ways to communicate in English. Alejo’s hard work paid off with many job offers! Today, he works as a sound engineer, school crossing guard, and music teacher.

Please join us in congratulating Alejo and all LVSC students for their hard work, bravery, and commitment to learning English.

While some may be enjoying the Dog Days of Summer, Daisy has been hard at work -- and so have we! 🐾 Since we first introduced Daisy earlier this month, she's been visiting volunteers and staff as we prepare for fall programming. Did you know 126 students have applied for services this fall?

Here's what happens next:

✅ Students complete an English assessment
✅ Tutors receive training (Learn more: https://www.literacysomerset.org/get-involved/tutor
✅ Tutors and students are carefully matched

We're excited to help new learners and volunteers connect!

Congratulations to our Tutor of the Year, June Tamburro!

Drawing on her experience as a pastoral leader, June found a new calling as a dedicated LVSC tutor in winter 2020. Her six students from Brazil, Georgia, Peru and Korea benefit from her patience, wisdom and encouragement. Whenever one student graduates, she readily welcomes another. June also leads a conversation group, spending hours creating relevant, meaningful and fun lessons. In one recent series, she taught students about baseball with songs, rules, explanations and Cracker Jacks for the class! Thank you, June, for all you do to create a warm and welcoming environment for LVSC students.

CONGRATULATIONS, to our AUGUST TUTOR OF THE MONTH -- AGNES MICHALEK! (Pictured, right)

Thirty years ago, Agnes’ mother was an LVSC student from Manville. Today, Agnes is paying that forward. She has been working with her student, Daniela from Costa Rica, for one year. They meet at the food court in Whole Foods, which has created a fun, casual learning environment. When Daniela told Agnes she corrected a translator at her son’s doctor’s appointment, Agnes realized their literacy work together was paying huge dividends!

Congratulations to Linda Choplick, LVSC’s 2026 Volunteer of the Year!

More than 200 LVSC volunteers provided 7000+ hours of free services this past year! We are grateful to all volunteers and pleased to recognize outstanding contributions of people like Linda Choplick, LVSC's 2026 Volunteer of the Year.

From the moment Linda joined LVSC in the fall of 2022, she has been a dedicated and enthusiastic supporter of every aspect of our organization. In addition to weekly tutoring, she shares her time and talents with LVSC in so many ways. She is a student assessor who helps make incoming students feel welcomed and comfortable when they take their initial English test. She attends our fundraising events and has generously donated the very popular cat basket and beach basket for our Garden of Literacy tricky tray. And this fall, she will be leading a conversation group on Monday mornings!
