πŸ§€ What’s Cooking at Bridgeton Public Schools?

Today was a "Krafty" kind of day in our cafeterias! Our students got to try a brand-new menu item: β€œKrafty” Mac & Cheese.
The verdict? It was a massive hit! πŸ™Œ

Students loved that classic, creamy flavor they know and love, while our nutrition team loved the recipe. πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³

Why it’s a win-win:
🌾 Whole Grains: Packed with the fiber needed to stay focused.
πŸ§‚ Lower Sodium: Heart-healthy and dietitian-approved.
πŸ’ͺ Student-Fueled: The perfect comfort food to power through the school day!

Check out what some of our students thought about our new menu item πŸ‘‡πŸ»πŸ‘‡πŸ»

Thank you Mr. Macchia for joining in on all the fun! 🎀

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³ Meet the New Face of Flavor: Chef Vess!

We had a delicious surprise in the kitchen today! Our new District Chef, Chef Vess, was busy whipping up a fresh batch of….well, they might look like golden roasted potatoes at first glance, but looks can be deceiving!

They are actually the crispiest, butteriest, most garlicky knots you’ve ever tasted! πŸ˜‹

Chef Vess isn’t just bringing amazing recipes to the table; he’s on a mission to level up our school lunches!

As our District Chef, he will be:
🍎 Crafting nutritious new menu items that students really crave.
πŸ₯— Helping to elevate fresh ingredients to make healthy eating the best part of the school day.
πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³ Working closely with our kitchen teams to bring restaurant-quality flair to our cafeterias.

We are so excited to have Chef Vess helping to lead the way towards a tastier, healthier future for our students.

Stay tuned- there will be plenty more delicious updates to come!

πŸ₯— From Seed to Salad! πŸ₯—

Excitement was in the air today at Buckshutem Road School! After a month of watching their food grow right before their eyes, our students finally got to taste the fruits (well, the greens!) of their patience. πŸ₯¬

Today’s lunch featured Tom Thumb lettuceβ€”a delicious miniature butterhead variety that our students have been observing all month long. There’s nothing quite like the pride on a student's face when they recognize exactly where their food came from!

This is exactly why Farm to School initiatives are so vital. By bringing the farm into the classroom and cafeteria, we are:
πŸ“šEducating students on the lifecycle of their food.
🚜 Connecting them to the source of their nutrition.
πŸ₯¬ Encouraging healthy eating habits that last a lifetime.

Seeing our students excited to reach for a salad proves that when kids grow it, they’ll eat it! πŸ₯¬βœ¨

πŸ₯• Root, Root, Hooray! πŸ₯•

Bridgeton Public Schools 3rd graders took a deep dive underground this week with a special Farm to School lesson: β€œRoot for the Root!” Students became plant scientists for the day, discovering how root vegetables grow, and learning how to identify which parts of a plant are edible (spoiler: it’s more than you think!).

The highlight? A Rainbow Carrot Taste Test! 🌈 πŸ₯•Students sampled purple, yellow, and orange carrots, which were locally sourced from Eagle Road Farms in Quarryville, Pa, and were absolutely amazed by the subtle flavor differences between the colors. After our Third grade "carrot census," the results are in: Yellow carrots took the #1 spot! πŸ†πŸ₯•

We are proud that our Farm to School Department works year-round helping our students connect with their food, understand how it grows, and get excited about healthy eating! πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸŒΎπŸ«

πŸ₯’ Pickle Power at Buckshutem Road School! πŸ₯’

Today, some students were busy turning cucumbers into delicious pickles! It was a hands-on lesson in precision and patience as they practiced their slicing skills, mastered measurements, and followed a recipe from start to finish. πŸ₯’πŸ”ͺβž•

Students used plenty of our β€œSecret Ingredient,” freshly harvested dill from our school hydroponic garden! Not only did it smell amazing, but it gave our students a front-row seat to the world of agriculture. πŸŒ±πŸ’§

From seed to brine, our students are learning what it means to grow and prepare their own food. Great job, chefs! πŸ§‘β€πŸ³

Our easy refrigerator pickle recipe is below for you to try! πŸ₯’πŸ§Š

🌱 From Seed to Tray: A Green Success Story 🌱

Today, students at Quarter Mile Lane School got to taste what they grew in our school hydroponic garden! πŸ₯¬

Our student helpers were so excited to help harvest our crop of butterhead lettuce, and they could hardly wait for lunch so they could try it with their friends. πŸ₯—βœ¨

This hands-on Farm to School experience is more than just gardening; our students are diving deep into the world of sustainable agriculture and learning how we can grow fresh, healthy food right here in their own cafeteria! πŸ₯¬

🫐Jersey Fresh in the Cafeteria 🫐

πŸ₯€ExCEL students had a delicious start to the day sampling Blu-Nana smoothies!

This Farm to School β€œJersey Tastes” recipe featured vibrant, local blueberries from Blueberry Bill Farms in Hammonton, NJ where they pick and freeze blueberries at the peak of freshness so we can enjoy them all year long! 🫐

Not only did students enjoy a fresh treat, but they also took home recipes to share the "Blu-Nana" magic with their families! 🏠✨

We are so proud to help educate our students about healthy eating habits while continuing to support our amazing local farmers. πŸšœπŸ’™
