Faith at Work Goodbye Fear... Hello Confidence!

โ€œDo not be conformed to this world, but be
transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by
testing you may discern what is the will of God, what
is good and acceptable and perfect.โ€
Romans 12:2

From about ages 12 to 28 or so, I was overwhelmingly insecure. I hated everything about my physical appearance. My face and my entire body. No, wait, I liked my calves, but that concludes the entire list of things I liked about myself. When I was pregnant with my first daughter, I ate ALL THE DOUGHNUTS, and I gained 60 pounds. She was NOT a 60-pound baby. So needless to say, there was a little extra Ashley floating around in those days, and many of my parts lived in different time zones than they once had.
One day I realized that I felt better about myself than I ever had, even with the part rearrangement and surplus me hanging around. I realized I hadnโ€™t had time to consume our culture the way I did before Aubrey was born. I was just trying to keep a human alive. No E! channel or Cosmopolitan magazine or Kardashians. Just Godโ€™s Word and the people that I love. I learned an important lesson that year that translates into every area of life. What we put in determines what comes out.

Garbage in, garbage out. Jesus in, Jesus out.
One of the primary things that gets in the way of us living out our faith is what we are putting into our minds. When we consume the things of the world, we act like the world. We talk like the world. We look like the world. When we feast on the things of Jesus, then we act, talk, and look like followers of Jesus.
We donโ€™t have to be conformed to this world. We can be transformed by the renewal of our mind, so that living out our faith becomes second nature. But we canโ€™t do it if the influence of Jesus is outweighed by the influence of the world.
Garbage in, garbage out. Good stuff in, good stuff out. So today, letโ€™s feast on the Bread of Life and the Living Water so that He is what is coming out in our words, actions, and reactions.

For one week, track how much time you spend reading your Bible, praying, listening to Christian music, etc. Also track how much time you spend watching the news, secular TV and books, and so on. Compare the two to get a feel for which one you are consuming the most and how big the spread between the two really is.

Have you ever met someone that God used to confirm your calling?

When Preston Poore showed up in our email inbox, I thought it was a scam. Why would a former Fortune 500 exec want to be on our little ole pod?

Come to find out, itโ€™s because God has him living out the same faith-in-the-marketplace mission as us, just in a different sphere of influence. What an encouragement!

Our crossed paths have produced so much fruit in my life and will continue to have an impact on our discipleship efforts for years to come!

โ€œLove one another with brotherly affection.
Outdo one another in showing honor.โ€
Romans 12:10

Are you scratching your head right now, asking, โ€œIsnโ€™t the saying โ€˜looking out for Number Oneโ€™? Is this girl crazy?โ€ Well, the answer to both of your questions is a resounding โ€œYESโ€!
Nearly everyone we work with is looking out for Number One; that is, themselves. And I get it. Putting others first at work seems like it could lead to career su***de. I mean, what kind of person helps a coworker meet a deadline when theyโ€™ve got their own deadline? What kind of person gives away credit for successes and accepts responsibility for failures?
I hope the answer is โ€œChrist followers.โ€ It would certainly make Christians stand out to be more about serving our coworkers than serving ourselves, or as todayโ€™s verse says, โ€œto outdo each other with honorโ€ (Romans 12:10).
I was stuck home in quarantine once, and a coworker called to see if I needed anything. I didnโ€™t need anything, but I mentioned that I desperately wanted a latte. She dropped everything to bring me a latte. In the middle of the busiest day of her week. Later I found out that she had forgotten her wallet that day and had already used her โ€œdesk moneyโ€. (Who even has such a thing?) So she drove twenty minutes home to get it. On the way, she got pulled over and had no driversโ€™ license to provide to the officer. She was also driving her dadโ€™s truck so she couldnโ€™t prove that she had insurance. She was finally able to get the officer what he needed, get her wallet, drive twenty minutes back to town, and get my latte. Needless to say, she lost a significant part of her cram-packed day, but she still dropped a latte on my front porch with a smile.
Iโ€™m telling you right now. She would have been out of luck on that latte business the second I realized Iโ€™d forgotten my wallet. But she outdid me in honor. She put me first, and as a result, the light of Jesus shone brightly that day in an undeniable way. If we really want to walk out our faith, we wonโ€™t look like the rest of the world looks at work. We will look out for Number Two more than Number One.

Practical Tip:
Think of some ways that you can help your co-workers with time consuming or irritating tasks and look for opportunities to jump in and put them before your to-do list.

โ€œIf your brother sins against you, go, and tell him his
fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you,
you have gained your brother.โ€
Matthew 18:15

I was just about to sit down to dinner with my extended family in this quaint little condo on the Texas Gulf Coast. The ringing phone signaled a change of plans. The caller was an employee of the company I worked for, and she had a complaint for the Human Resources (HR) Department. Crap. That was me.
In the emotion-filled and expletive-laden 30-minute call, I learned that what I had on my hands was not anything worthy of a complaint to the HR Department. What I had was an interpersonal conflict, or as I like to call itโ€ฆdrama.
One woman was convinced another woman was talking about her behind her back. Did she go ask the other woman if this was, in fact, the case? Did she try to determine if she was at fault in any way, bringing on the disdain of the other woman? Did she attempt to resolve the issue before calling her vacated HR professional? Of course not. Instead, she busted into the break room and told every other employee and supervisor she saw, called her own supervisor who had the audacity to not be in the break room when she needed him, and called her HR Director who was enjoying a nice family vacation at the beach.
Listen. I get it. Confrontation is not that fun, and it is WAY easier to just talk about the issue behind the backs of the ones involved. But that doesnโ€™t honor the Lord. In fact, Jesus tells us how He wants us to handle it when people wrong us. He says, โ€œIf your brother sins against you, go, and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brotherโ€ (Matthew 18:15).
While Jesus was specifically talking about conflict with other believers, the same principle applies in our dealings with those in our workplaces regardless of whether they follow Christ. We can actually gain a closer relationship with people through our conflicts if we will address them one-on-one. Itโ€™s when we call in the calvary of friends, cliques, and allies that we damage relationships with our coworkers.
Today, watch as the drama, both small and large, unfolds at work. Watch how people respond and interact. When we choose wisdom and integrity in our conflict resolution and address things differently than those who donโ€™t follow Jesus, our coworkers will notice the difference even if they canโ€™t quite put their finger on what it is.

When we choose to follow Jesusโ€™s instructions for relational issues at work, we are living out our faith.

Practical Tip:
When in a disagreement with a co-worker, seek to be resolved instead of right. Thinking through this filter will cause us to choose our words far more carefully.

โ€œDo not lie to one another, seeing that you have put
off the old self with its practices and have put on the
new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after
the image of its creator.โ€
Colossians 3:9-10

There was a study done a few years ago, and 98 percent of employees admitted to lying at work. I shared that statistic with a group of managers during a training one day, and one of them popped off, โ€œYeah, and the 2% who said they hadnโ€™t lied were lying on the survey!โ€
98 percent. So, nearly everyone. Lying.
Think of a time that someone lied to you at work. No, for real. Think of an example.
How did you feel about that person? Besides being mad enough to cut their tires, didnโ€™t you feel a sense of total distrust? Not just about work-related things either. About ALL things. Often, we know when we are being lied to. Even if it isnโ€™t an outright lie. Even if it is only a turn of a phrase, a twist of the truth, or a spin on the way something is being presented, we usually have an inkling when we are hearing something less than the truth.
In those instances, regardless of the underlying circumstances, we have an inherent distrust of the dishonest person. Now letโ€™s flip the script. When it is us that isnโ€™t being completely honest, we are setting ourselves up to be considered untrustworthy. If we canโ€™t be trusted about work
processes and personal interactions, why would anyone trust what we say about eternity or salvation or hope? Youโ€™re right. They wouldnโ€™t.
As Colossians 3:9-10 says, we are not to lie to one another. When we accepted Christ, we put off our old self and our old ways, and we put on our new self which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of our Creator. We have to continue to make that wardrobe change every day. When we show up at work, day in and day out, having put off our old ways and having put on our new ways, we are walking out our faith. In our honesty, we will look different than 98 percent of our coworkers, creating a witness for Jesus that stands out among the masses.

Practical Tip:
Determine when you are most likely to be dishonest at work. Is it to prevent negative consequences? Is it to make yourself look better? Is it in self-preservation? Present that temptation to God and ask Him to make a way of escape and to change your heart.
