I can do good all by myself!!!

My youngest got lost at Disneyland.

It was terrifying, but a situation we had prepared a game plan for - and thank goodness we did. He knew what to do. I knew what to do, and we found him safely in just minutes.

Good parents lose kids. Good kids get lost.

When my family got off a ride, our wires got crossed - three kids, packed crowds, trying to find the stroller, and navigating the Disney App on my phone, meant that we zigged and he zagged. He was 5. This happens.

By the time we realized it, he was nowhere in sight. I left my husband with our other kids to stay where we last saw him and to alert park employees.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I took off sprinting, shouting to every employee I saw that my son, age 5, was lost and a brief clothing description as I ran. “Boy, 5, gray sweatshirt, red shoes.”

When our kids go missing, be loud. Be very loud & be descriptive. This is not the time be embarrassed. It’s the time to mobilize everyone who can help. Every person there knew to look for my son because I was so loud.

A young couple in their early 20s, having heard me, ran to my side. “We know where he is!” They grabbed my arm and shoved me through a crowd to where my son was sitting next to a park employee.

We hugged and hugged and hugged. I thanked the park employee, Debbie, so much for sitting with him. She said, “He did great! He walked right up to me and said, ‘I’m Matt and I’m lost.’” Just like we’d always practiced.

Later, I asked Matt about being lost. He said “Once I saw Debbie, I knew I wasn’t lost anymore.”

Take the time today to talk with your kids about what to do if they get separated from you. Talk often. Talk before big events. Talk at the dinner table. Go over this vital information. We had Matt back in minutes partly because he knew what to do.

We began these conversations with our kids at age 2. There is nothing more terrifying than getting separated from your child, but being prepared helps a little.

But please, remember: Good parents lose kids. Good kids get lost. 07/28/2025
