At Riverside Rhymes, a certified teacher guides children to develop the social, physical, mathematical and linguistic skills needed for their entrance into Kindergarten through a nature play based, child-led curriculum. Whether we are in the basement classroom, on the porch, in the yard, or out on a nature walk, we are learning through play. Play sparks children's intrinsic desire to learn. Children acquire long term knowledge as they move through nature, or their interest areas, exploring the world around them. An informal small group (or invitation to play) and a 'circle time' are also conducted daily. At Riverside Rhymes, your children will get the benefits of a low teacher-student ratio (no more than 7 kids to one adult) while still benefiting from socialization with children their own age. Your children will become bonded to me and each other so they spend their early learning years amongst an extended family who loves them. They will learn positive social skills and conflict management skills as I mediate any challenges that may arise. Special needs students are welcome. A great lesson for kids to help keep them safe. Many times perpetrators will tell children they need to keep what happened (the abuse) a secret. Teach your child secrets are not allowed.

Learning Through Play
As pupils we were tested, measured, marked, graded, compared, judged for years and years. As teachers we test, measure, mark, grade, compare and judge year in and year out. So it is little wonder that many teachers and places of education are having some difficulty with child led learning through play. None of the familiar ‘school’ behaviours we experienced ourselves - or have been trained to do - are a good fit for child led learning through play.

Understanding and valuing learning through play requires a whole new way of looking at learning, and a more wholistic way of viewing the child. We need to take off our old-school ‘teacher hats’ and observe the children playing with one question uppermost. It’s not the measuring question “What can they do?”, it is the process question, “What are they doing?” The difference between these two views is like the difference between night and day when it comes to learning to SEE learning.

Some things to look for with your ‘what-are-they-doing-spectacles’:
• the level of engagement
• curiosity manifest
• repetition while the learning is integrated
• the learned skills combined and used in other contexts
• more complexity and variation in the chosen activities of the child
You will see these things (and more) happening in the universal patterns of children’s play when you hold the question “what are they doing”. You will observe the children learning the way children have always learned in this fabulous physical sensory world.

Yesterday we read My Many Colored Days by Dr Seuss and tried to make something out of clay that represented our feelings.

Turns out that was pretty hard for everyone to do. So we ended up just playing with the clay in our hands and talking about how the clay made us feel.

Today we started off the morning by painting them (along with a few salt dough ornaments I had leftover from Christmas).
