Do you have an old Shell Apple tree that has been on your family’s property for decades? Maybe it’s growing at an old homestead, was planted by a grandparent, or has simply “always been there”?

Dr. Kevin Folta and Mujahid Hussain from the University of Florida are collecting samples as part of their research of the historic Shell of Alabama apple.

How to take a sample: 🍃
Simply collect 2–3 fresh, healthy leaves from the tree and
➡️ Bring them to the Escambia County Extension Office, and we’ll make sure they get to the researchers, OR
➡️ Contact us at (251) 867-7760 for information on how you can mail your sample directly to the University of Florida.

Yesterday, Dr. Kevin Folta and Mujahid Hussain from the University of Florida, visited the Escambia County Extension Office to share with our community some exciting findings from their research into the heritage and genetics of the ‘Shell of Alabama’ apple. The Shell Apple was developed in the late 19th century by Mr. Greenberry Shell right here in Escambia County, Alabama!

Their work is uncovering new clues about this historic apple’s origins and its connection to other apple varieties, giving us an opportunity to better understand and preserve an important piece of our area’s agricultural history! 🌳🍎

Follow along as we learn, share and host Dr. Folta and Mujahid again to hear more about their important work and how our community can help!

Main Street Atmore announces 2nd annual Bee More Festival weekend
Main Street Atmore announced the 2nd Bee More Festival Weekend for Aug. 28-29, 2026, celebrating honey bees, pollinators, and downtown Atmore. Funded by the Science Discovery on Main Street initiative with a $20,000 grant, the event features education days, a Friday dinner, and a free Saturday festival with STEM and conservation focus. https://ift.tt/NEfgvMU
