We’re so grateful to share this beautiful testimonial from the Principal of Laurel Plains Elementary School in New City, NY about the Live Joyfully assemblies at the school.

Nicole Johnson, author of Joyfully Josie, read to students in grades K–2 and 3–5 and spoke about the meaning of the Live Joyfully message. In honor of March as Disability Awareness Month, the assemblies also included a conversation about disability awareness, inclusion, and the importance of seeing and valuing every child. The students asked thoughtful questions and showed such empathy, compassion, and understanding.

Teachers also learned about the accompanying Disability Inclusion course, which offers NY CTLE credits and helps educators carry these lessons of empathy and inclusion into the classroom all year long.

March is Developmental Disability Awareness Month. Established in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan, DDAM highlights the importance of fostering a society where people with disabilities are empowered to contribute to their communities. While March provides an opportunity for heightened awareness, true awareness happens when we commit to creating accessible environments and productive opportunities year-round.
The 2026 Theme: “We’re Here: Then, Now, Always” focuses on historical progress and continued advocacy.

The Inclusion Done Right! Conference at SUNY Stony Brooke University is the epitome of advancing disability inclusion the RIGHT way! Agnes McConlogue Ferro is a force of good and produced another fantastic event. I was blown away by - a fierce activist for racial and disability justice, who draws a crowd in and as real as they come. Keri, your voice is needed and we all thank you. Let’s keep taking steps forward and spread the Live Joyfully message far and wide.

Today I had the joy of leading assemblies for the amazing students at South Salem Elementary School in Port Washington, NY—sharing my personal story as Josie’s mom, my daughter with a rare disease called FOXG1 syndrome that causes many disabilities.

I shared that I saw a need: young children needed an easy, meaningful way to understand children with disabilities—and more importantly, to know how to include them. So I wrote Joyfully Josie to give them that story as an experience. I read the book to them, and they followed the pages from the big screen.

We talked about Disability Awareness Month and what the message Live Joyfully really means—that including children with disabilities helps everyone feel more seen, connected, and joyful. The students were hanging on every word, and their questions during the Q&A were so thoughtful, empathetic, and wise beyond their years.

It’s incredible to see how naturally kids embody the message of inclusion—and how excited they are to share their feelings and ideas.
