I’ve been wanting that 45 in the belt for weeks.

Strength up, conditioning up

Staying strong and training at a high level while dieting down, is a super rewarding feeling.

What is it to be coachable?

Last week Jake told me to shorten the range on my hip thrusts. I was losing the glutes at the bottom.

Different from how we approach most lower body movements. Usually, full ROM is the goal.

More isn’t always better.

We talked through the change and made a plan for this week.

Today I filmed my first set, found Jake, showed him.

We went even shorter.

Being coachable is willingness; openness.

It requires trust, adaptability, collaboration.

Less ego. Less bias.

Listen. Adjust. Execute.

Still work to do on this movement I’m sure, but that’s why I’m here.

To keep learning. Keep growing. Practice makes progress, and that’s the only goal.

This is your reminder that you are not made of glass.

We had a WEEK.

Chopping and loading wood. Early-morning personal training sessions. Counseling sessions. Kid appointments. Schoolwork. A quick jaunt to Boston and back with the kids (about 9 hours round trip).

My husband and I made a deal:
We’d keep our normal training day instead of rearranging the week… but we’d take it easy.

Sure.

I started with single-leg extensions.

Added reps.

Hamstring curls.

More reps.

RDLs.

More weight and more reps.

Adduction. Abduction. Hip thrusts.

You get the idea.

Eventually our paths crossed when he asked me to spot his leg press.

He proceeded to have the biggest set of his current block.

“I thought we were pulling back today?”

“Did you?”

“…No.”

He smiled. “Right.”

I had to laugh.

Of course we didn’t.

I asked him if he thought there was something wrong with our brains.

“Definitely.”

Bodybuilding has taught me something important:

You can be tired and still perform.
You can be hungry and still perform.
You can not feel like training and still have an incredible session.

How you feel walking into the gym does not predict what you’re capable of once you start working.

That doesn’t mean you need to add weight and reps to everything every week.

And it doesn’t mean recovery doesn’t matter.

It means progression has more forms than numbers on the stack.

More weight.
More reps.
Better technique.
Better form.
More precision.
More control.
More intensity.
A better mental attitude.

Do it better. Any way you can.

Learn the difference between your body telling you something is wrong and your brain telling you that you’re tired, uncomfortable, or would rather not do hard things today.

Respect the first.

Don’t surrender to the second.

You are capable of being tired.
You are capable of being uncomfortable.
You are capable of having an imperfect week and still showing up ready to work.

You are not made of glass.

Body weight in the high 260’s now. Zero dedicated cardio (just counting daily steps), plenty of calories to drive training progression every week, and making big changes in the mirror!

This isn’t a contest prep. Just a good reset to once again build size upon all the way through the rest of the year.

I worked with Jon Lofthouse last week to build up my posing skills and it was amazing! Jon is brilliant as a teacher and as an athlete himself. I’m going to keep practicing this s**t until I can move like poetry. You can build all the physique you want but if you can’t showcase it when it counts, it’s worth a lot less.

The full set video nobody asked for.

Honestly I get it. It’s not flashy. No yelling or antics or a lot of the stuff I actually love. But really, none of that really adds up as much as just strapping in for the long haul and doing the damn work.

This kind of training has served me the best for growing muscle, and sustaining training for lots of weeks without accumulating aches and pains beyond the usual wear and tear.

The best kind of training plan is the plan that lets me train and grow the most.
