In case you missed this information, you may qualify for social security while still collecting your retirement pension! Mike, the PCRAE vice-president, sent this Clarion article about the successful legislation that Maine retired teachers have been waiting for!

Reminder that tomorrow is the last PCREA meeting for this year. We meet at the Penobscot County Conservation Club at 11:15. It is probably too late to purchase a meal for tomorrow, but please consider joining us when we start up in September. The dues are $5 a year, and the PCCC serves us a delicious lunch shortly after 11:30. This facility has plenty of parking and is located on the first floor. The programs after the luncheon have been excellent this year!!!

PCREA members,

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 8 at the Penobscot County Conservation Club in Brewer. Doors open at 11:00, meeting/meal ($12) at 11:30, guest speaker at 12:30 with door prizes at the end.

Guest speaker is Lauren Kimball who will speak to us about "Indoor Plants".

Bring in your used books for sale with proceeds going to our Scholarship Fund. Remember to take back your books that don't sell.

If you plan to attend, please call Esther Bushway at 947-6448 or email Mike Smart at [email protected]. Remember that if you sign up to attend but don't, you are responsible to pay the $12 meal fee.

At April's meeting, voted into 2 year terms were: Esther Bushway, President; Mike Smart, Vice President; Philippa Libby, Secretary, and Carol Brooks & Mary Bagley, Co-Treasurers.

The first PCREA meeting of 2025 is scheduled for Thursday, March 20, 2025 at 11:30 at the Penobscot County Conservation Club, 570 N Main Street, Brewer, and the doors open early for a social time. If you plan on eating lunch, the cost is $12, which includes meal, dessert, and drink. Please email Mike Smart [email protected] or call Esther Bushway at 947-6448 if you plan to attend.

If you are able, please bring in your unwanted books to donate for our book sale with the proceeds supplementing our scholarship fund. Also wanted are treasures to be given away as door prizes at the end of the meeting.

The guest speaker is from Cyr Bus who will speak about their scheduled bus trips.

On Thursday, October 17th, the Penobscot County Retired Educators Association meets at the Penobscot County Conservation Club, which is located at 570 N Main Street in Brewer. Doors open at 11:00, and we dine at 11:30 ($12). Our business meeting begins at 12:00 noon, followed by a guest speaker at 12:30. Door prizes will be handed out after the program.

If you plan to attend the retired teachers' meeting, please call Esther Bushway at 207-947-6448 or contact Mike Smart at mdsmart8@gmail to give the kitchen crew a headcount.

Last month’s program was on Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, and we were impressed!

The next PCREA meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 18 at the Penobscot County Conservation Club. The doors open at 11:00, the meal is at 11:30 ($12), and there are door prizes!!!

The program is on the historical buildings of Bangor, and the guest speaker will begin at 12:30.

Philippa and Judith are making the PCREA board for the Convention on May 2, 2024. We are asking members to email us a photo of a volunteer activity, which can be anything that members do to help others. Judith’s email address is [email protected]
We are soliciting an object for a drawing at the PCREA table. Does someone have a prize to donate? Usually, Philippa solicits a pie from Dysart’s, but they may not happen this year.

Dear MEA-Retired Members –

The MEA is always prioritizing improvements in retirement benefits for retired teachers and school employees. We are committed to a retirement benefit package for school employees that allows them to retire with the dignity they deserve.

Over the past years, we have made some progress and we have some updates to share on retirement issues that may impact you. The MEA will host a webinar for MEA-Retired members on Monday September 25th from noon -1pm. You can register for the webinar here: Lunch and Learn for MEA Retired Members

In this webinar MEA staff and others will be on hand to address the following topics:
• Retired Teacher/Ed Tech (II and III) Health Care Program: As part of the state budget passed in July, the state has increased the amount it pays for the MEA BT Medicare Advantage plan from 55% to 60%. However, while we had hoped the state will apply this change retroactively to July 1, 2023, we have learned the state will only start applying the new 60% state payment beginning in November of 2023.
• Pension Cost-of-living Adjustments (COLAs): Most current retirees can expect two cost-of-living adjustments in the current months. First, eligible retirees can expect a 3% COLA on a base amount beginning this month. In addition, in the state budget the Legislature and the Governor included a one-time 3% ad hoc COLA that we can expect retirees will receive beginning in November.
• Social Security Offsets (GPO/WEP): We hear from retirees nearly every day about the negative impacts of the Social Security Offsets. MEA staff and others will be on hand to answer questions you have about the offsets and provide the most up-to-date information about our efforts with NEA in Washington, DC to make progress on eliminating or reducing the impact of these offsets.
In this webinar, the MEA staff and others will provide updates on these critical issues and will also be on hand to answer questions. We also hope to have other guests on the webinar who can provide additional updates and answer any questions you may have.

This legislative session we made some progress – but not enough. As part of this webinar, we will also talk about how we can increase our ability to make progress when the Legislature returns in January.

PCREA has its first meeting of the year on September 21st. People begin gathering after 11 am, and the $12 lunch is served about 11:30. There is a door prize table created by members who have something at home to give away or a craft. As an example, I have won books, a spring candy basket, dishtowels, and a plant.
