Mountain Sun Community School Mountain Sun Community School, serving children in preschool through middle school, is Brevard's only

Mountain Sun Community School serves children in preschool through middle school in a carefully prepared environment with specially trained teachers using the Montessori method along with other complementary educational practices. Mountain Sun is Brevard's only independent school and was formed as a non-profit parent-driven effort to create a caring holistic community school that nurtures each child's passion and unique abilities. Our small class sizes and multi age classrooms create an environment where each child is challenged and inspired to be their best selves academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. Mountain Sun holistically nurtures, challenges, and guides each unique child to discover academic skills using Montessori principles, explore the natural world, create through self-expression, and belong to a collaborative, diverse and peaceful community. Nature always has something to teach us. 🌿🍄

On a hike today, we spotted something pretty remarkable: a tiny rhododendron growing right through a bright orange mushroom!

How did it get there? Which came first? And what exactly is that mushroom?

Sometimes the most meaningful learning begins with a simple observation and a whole lot of questions.

We’re still swooning over the absolutely lovely production of Charlotte’s Web our students brought to life with the help of drama instructor Matt Durt. 🕸️💛

From the costumes and performances to the laughter, tenderness, and confidence that filled the stage, it was one of those evenings that reminded us just how much beauty lives inside creative community experiences like these.

Watching students step into new roles, support one another, and shine in their own unique ways is always something special — and this performance was no exception.

A heartfelt thank you to Matt Durt for sharing his time, creativity, and guidance with our students, and to all the families and community members who came out to support the show.

We are endlessly grateful for the businesses, organizations, and community members who choose to support Mountain Sun Community School through partnership, donations, encouragement, and shared belief in what we do.

Because of our community partners, our students are able to experience meaningful outdoor education, creative learning opportunities, community events, scholarship support, and so much more.

The Raccoons returned from their camping trip a little muddier, a little more tired… and a whole lot more grown. 🌿

Over the course of just a few days, we watched students problem-solve through peace talks, pack up camp with newfound independence, support one another through homesickness, and carry each day with incredible Positive Mental Attitudes.

These trips ask so much of our students — resilience, flexibility, teamwork, courage — and every single year, they rise to meet it in beautiful ways.

From identifying over 40 species of trees at Joyce Kilmer to singing around the campfire, whittling, river play, poetry at Huckleberry K**b, volleyball games, pink pony club singalongs, and spotting thousands of crickets… this trip was filled with the kinds of memories that stay with you for a long time.

We’re so proud of this crew and all the ways they continue to grow. 💛
