💙🌪️ Homecoming Weekend 2026 is officially underway!

Check-in at the Alumni House has been busy all morning, and it is wonderful to see so many familiar faces back on campus! We’re welcoming Brevard College graduates, their friends and families for a weekend of reconnections, memories and Tornado pride. Welcome home, BC alumni! 💙

There’s plenty to look forward to this weekend, including:

🌟 Friday’s Distinguished Alumni and Faculty Awards and Athletics Hall of Fame Induction at 5:30pm in the Porter Center
🌟 Saturday’s Homecoming football game at 2pm, with tailgating beginning at 10am
🌟 Sunday’s Fall Alumni Choral Concert, “Blessing,” at 3pm in the Porter Center

📚 Food for Thought extends learning beyond the classroom, creating space for conversation, curiosity, and connection across the BC community.

Recently, Assistant Professor of Communication Dr. Sam Taylor led a Food for Thought discussion based on his Ph.D. dissertation, “The Communicative Process of Exiting a Value-Laden Organization: Millennial Faith Deconstruction & Identity Reconstruction.” His presentation explored the complex process of leaving evangelical Christianity and the ways individuals navigate changes in personal beliefs, values, and identity. Through a communication-focused perspective, the discussion examined how people make sense of these transitions and understand themselves in relation to the communities and belief systems that have shaped their lives.

Held in the Center for Teaching and Learning Classroom in Jones Library, the conversation offered an opportunity for reflection and learning about the role communication plays in shaping personal experiences and identity.

✨ Food for Thought continues tomorrow at 12:30pm with Dr. Ani Pan presenting “Busting Myths, Building Mastery: Applying the 8 Principles of Learning to Physics of Sports.” Join us in the CTL Classroom to explore the connections between learning, teaching, and athletic performance. All are welcome!

🏆 Congratulations to legendary Brevard College Coach Norm Witek on his induction into the WNC Sports Hall of Fame by the Mountain Athletic Amateur Club!

Over his remarkable career at Brevard College, Coach Witek led the men's cross country program for 18 seasons, guiding the team to four consecutive national championships in the 1980s and a marathon national title in 1982. His impact extends far beyond the course, with 118 student-athletes earning All-American honors under his guidance, including three individual national champions and two Olympians.

After 47 years as an instructor at Brevard and more than 50 years directing the renowned Brevard Distance Runners Camp, Coach Witek's legacy continues to shape generations of student-athletes. 🏃

Join us in congratulating Coach Witek on this well-deserved recognition! 💙🌪️

Congratulations to Dr. Charles Ecenbarger, Associate Professor of Communication and Coordinator of the Communication Major, on the release of his new book, "Mobile Personalization: The History and Theory of Mobile Streaming Media," co-authored with Dr. Justin Grandinetti of UNC Charlotte!

The book traces the history of mobile media from drive-in theaters to today’s algorithm-driven streaming platforms, examining how personalized content shapes our attention, perspectives and interactions with the world around us. It also explores the technology and infrastructure behind our seemingly endless access to digital content, bringing greater understanding to the systems that increasingly influence our everyday lives.

By examining both the convenience of mobile media and its broader social consequences, Dr. Ecenbarger and his co-author invite readers to look beyond the screen and consider how technology is changing the way we live and connect with one another.

At Brevard College, this research also extends into the classroom. Dr. Ecenbarger will use the book as the textbook for his COM 150: Understanding Media course next semester, bringing his scholarship directly into students’ learning experiences. By making the book freely available, he also helps reduce the cost of course materials while contributing an accessible resource that encourages students to think critically about the media they use every day.

🚨 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 🚨

Congrats to the Brevard College cycling team, who is bringing home national championship hardware back to BC! The Tornados secured first place in the Varsity Team Relay at the 2026 USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships this afternoon in Grand Junction, Colorado!

🔬 What does engineering look like beyond the classroom?

Students in Dr. Audie Lee’s EGR 190: Engineering Science Across Disciplines put their communication and critical thinking skills to work yesterday during their group midterm presentations. As part of the assignment, students researched an engineering ethical dilemma, took a position, supported their argument with evidence, and presented their findings to an audience. 🎤

The presentation was designed to give students experience with something they will encounter throughout their professional careers: communicating effectively in unfamiliar situations and in front of audiences they may not know. The students presented in a different setting than their usual classroom and faced an unexpected audience that included several of their athletic coaches.

For students in Brevard College’s new Engineering Science major, experiences like this are an important part of developing not only technical knowledge, but also the communication, reasoning and professional skills they will carry into their future careers. ⚙️

From researching complex questions to defending their ideas in front of an unfamiliar audience, these students are gaining the skills and confidence to take their engineering education beyond the classroom and into the professional world. 📚
