🧬 When she isn’t teaching at Brevard College, Dr. Rachel Hillyer, Associate Professor of Biology and Coordinator of the Biology Major, spends her summer teaching a new generation of young scientists through the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.

Rachel has been teaching with NCSSM’s summer residential program since 2021. The program gives middle and high school students from across the state a chance to spend a week learning, exploring, and having a little summer-camp fun.

Rachel teaches genetics, one of the program’s most popular courses, but her approach is anything but a traditional lecture. Her classes are built around questions, experiments, and hands-on activities. She encourages students to ask questions and lets their curiosity help shape where the lessons go. 🔬

One of the things Rachel enjoys most is getting to teach a different age group. NCSSM students are inquisitive, engaged, and, perhaps most importantly, genuinely want to be there. She says the experience gives her a chance to explore what it would be like to teach high school while continuing to teach in her college classroom.

And the learning goes both ways. Rachel says her summer teaching experiences and her work at Brevard College are constantly feeding into each other. No matter the age group, teaching means figuring out how to meet students where they are and build from there.

That’s experiential education in action. Whether she’s introducing young scientists to genetics during the summer or helping Brevard College students explore biology during the academic year, Rachel brings the lessons, questions, and experiences from one classroom into the other. 🧪💙

Earlier this week, returning student-athletes traded the field, court, and course for trails, classrooms, and service projects across our community. 🌲💪

The Brevard College Athletics Day of Service gave student-athletes an opportunity to head into Pisgah National Forest, DuPont State Recreational Forest, and Brevard Elementary School to lend a hand wherever it was needed. Teams tackled trail maintenance, painting, cleaning, moving furniture, and other projects throughout the day. One group even stayed on campus to write welcome notes for local elementary and middle school students to be distributed by TC Strong. 💙

A collaboration between BC Athletics and Outdoor Leadership & Experiential Education (OLEE), the day was a meaningful way for our returning student-athletes to explore more of the place they call home, connect with each other and the greater Brevard community, and give back before another year gets underway.

A huge thank you to the organizations and partners who helped make the day possible:

🌲 U.S. Forest Service
🏔️ Pisgah National Forest
🌿 DuPont State Recreational Forest
🏞️ Friends of DuPont Forest
🏫 Brevard Elementary School
💙 TC Strong
🌲 Cradle of Forestry - Heritage Site & Discovery Center
🌿 FIND Outdoors
🧗 Carolina Climbers Coalition
🌲 The Pisgah Conservancy
🥾 Southern Appalachian Wilderness Stewards (SAWS)
🚵 Pisgah Area SORBA
⛰️ Carolina Mountain Club
💙 The Unity Folks

And an extra-big shoutout to Mary Smith, Trails, Wilderness, and Dispersed Recreation Program Manager with the U.S. Forest Service, for her leadership coordinating our many projects throughout Pisgah National Forest and helping make this day possible! This was an enormous undertaking, and we are incredibly grateful for her belief in this project and the role she played in making it happen.

Thank you to everyone who welcomed our Tornados, put them to work, and gave them another way to be part of the community beyond the Brevard College campus. And thank you to our athletes, who rolled up their sleeves and got to work shortly after arriving on campus. 🌪️💙

🏡 Another round of move-in is underway! 🏡

Shoutout to all the people who are making the process smooth, welcoming, and enjoyable. Student workers, support staff, community volunteers, and, of course, parents: None of this would be possible without you! 🙌

A huge thank-you to everyone helping our new and returning Nados get settled in! 🌪️💙

Before the new school year begins on Monday, let's highlight the Class of 2026 one final time! 🎓

For Martin Moguel Aguilar ’26, graduation kicked off a dream-worthy summer. After attending two World Cup matches, Martin traveled to The Hague for the Hague Summer School hosted by Release Peace, where he spent several weeks exploring international affairs through hands-on workshops and conversations with conflict mediators, ambassadors, NGO leaders, and war crimes investigators. The experience also included visits to the International Criminal Court, International Court of Justice, Eurojust, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and several embassies. 🇳🇱

Although most of the Summer School participants studied International Relations or Political Science, Martin brought a different perspective through his double major in History and Communication. History courses with Dr. Jordan Kuck, including Ethnic Cleansing/International Law, Modern Russia, and History of Terrorism, gave him historical context for the institutions and conflicts he encountered in The Hague. Dr. Abby Whitaker’s Conflict & Crisis course helped him consider how conflict is addressed from both domestic and international perspectives, while Dr. Charles Ecenbarger’s communication courses and his sports media practicum with Phil de Montmollin helped him develop the confidence to engage with people, share his ideas, and communicate his passions.

A Dean’s List student and Honors Program member, Martin also received Outstanding Senior, the Outstanding Communication Major, History Excellence in Writing, and Outstanding Oral Presentation at the Undergraduate Research Conference during his time at BC. 🏆 He has already taken his undergraduate experiences and accolades and run with them, putting them into practice on an international stage this summer.

What a way to celebrate four years at BC! Congratulations, Martin! We can’t wait to see what comes next. 🌪️✨ A Brevard College degree can take you places. Sometimes, those places are farther than you ever imagined. 🌎💙
