Art Loop: Process Art: Spooky Eyes

We drew circles onto watercolor paper. They would then add watercolors onto watercolors and let it bleed ending with black in the center to create a pupil. They then cut white pieces of paper to add to the pupil to make it look like it had the light glare.

Invitation to Build: Can you build a Spooky House?

I always like to change up and rotate the girls block area and at the beginning of the month I made it an open ended spooky play with bits and bobs of the season and these Paper Roll tubes. The girls painted the paper rolls black and used chalk to create the pieces of their home. Adding some fun lighting for ambience and they have an ever changing spooky house for their block area!

Contraction Hunt

Write contractions onto a white sheet of paper. Place a glass dish on top of the paper. Then fill dish partially with water and black coloring. I gave her cards with two words that she then had to use a clear glass to find the contraction those words make.

Spooky Candy Houses!

We had the best time creating these. It’s just like making gingerbread houses but we use Halloween candy and chocolate graham crackers.

One of the biggest challenges with creating these is definitely the frosting being too drippy. Below is the frosting we make that is like cement!!! Seriously, the best frosting glue.

4 egg whites
1 tsp of cream of tartar
4 cups powdered sugar

Whip together until firmed up which was about 4 minutes for me. I also added food coloring to this batch to make it more grey colored to add to the spooky effect.

Broom Balance

Raise your hand if you’ve read this book a bazillion times like our household. It’s a sure favorite over here for good reason. This kind Witch opens her heart and broom to those in need and I for one think we need more of that nowadays. More goodness. More kindness.

Enter the Cat. Clearly wants his person to himself and his space on the broom. But the broom is off balance with just the two of them and the Witch knows to offer more space and teaches the Cat the more love and kindness that’s given the more balanced the broom will be.

For this activity I used...
the Witch: 10 cubes and placed into one side
The others are placed on the other side:
the Cat: 4
the Dog: 3
the Bird: 2
the Frog: 1

While each animal was added to the broom the closer the broom was to being balanced.

Spooky Paper Chain Garland

This took up our whole afternoon! We loved this paper hand craft.

To make ours we cut our construction paper into 3 inch strips. Folded into 8ths and traced onto both folds. Very important the tracer hits both sides of the folds otherwise they won’t stay chained together. After each piece was cut out (don’t cut the fold!!!!) we taped them together to make a long garland. I loved how theirs came out.

PS: they made their own tracers.

❗️This is a great way to learn about bilateral symmetry (sneaky math). Strengthens hand muscles cutting through all those layers. And has the wow element when they see their work stretched!

Poetry Tea Time: Halloween themed
We plan. We prep. We bake. We set. We gather around cinnamon tea and fun goodies to read spooky poems and stories and allow space to create their own. I usually share theirs but they both said they weren’t willing to share their completed works this year so I will respect their wishes.

✨Disappearing Girl ✨

I had her draw a little girl in costume (cat girl was her choice) onto a paper and cut it out.
Place the girl into a plastic sealing bag (seal tightly!)
Onto the bag on top of the girl draw a skeleton form.
Then dip into a glass of water and say the magic words 😉 (insert what would be fun for them)
Watch as she magically disappears and all that remains are her bones!!!

So, what’s the science behind it all??
* Light travels in a straight line
* When the light moves from one material to another of different density, the light will bend
* The girl in costume disappears because the different densities of air and water causes the light to bend
* This bending is called REFRACTION
