A quarter-century later, the Brentwood school community gathered at Brentwood High School to remember the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, honor the first responders and heroes who showed extraordinary courage, and reflect on the responsibility we have to keep their stories alive for the next generation.

The Board of Education, local dignitaries and lawmakers, teachers, administrators and students joined together for a solemn memorial service led by our AFJROTC cadets and their instructors.

Superintendent Wanda Ortiz-Rivera reflected on what that day continues to teach us, and on a quality that has always defined Brentwood: โ€œWhen someone needs us, we come together. We show up. We take care of one another.โ€

Through music, reflection, historical remembrance and the ringing of ceremonial bells, our AFJROTC cadets helped honor those whose lives were forever changed. Twenty-five years later, we remember, we honor and we carry their memory forward.

On this Patriot Day, we pause to mark the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001. We remember the lives lost, honor the extraordinary bravery and sacrifice of first responders, and reflect on the enduring values of service, courage, and unity. Together, we pay tribute to those we lost and to all who continue to inspire us.

๐Ÿ‘‹ Say hello to the new Principal of Oak Park Elementary, Robert Peterson!

โ€œThis is my dream job. I am so excited to be the next principal of Oak Park Elementary School and for the opportunity to continue furthering my career working for the Brentwood School District,โ€ Peterson said. โ€œWhat excites me even more is the potential I see daily from our students. I look forward to working with our school community to help our students reach their fullest potential and achieve their lifelong success. At Oak Park we believe every child is capable of success, no exceptions.โ€

Peterson brings a strong record of instructional leadership and student advocacy to his new role after serving as Oak Park's assistant principal since 2023. During his time in the building, he has worked closely with students, families and staff to strengthen academic achievement, enhance school culture and expand systems of support that help every child succeed.

As assistant principal, Peterson has led Oak Park's Multi-Tiered System of Supports team, developed the school's MTSS Resource Center and guided the work of the School Improvement Team to strengthen instructional practices and student outcomes. He has analyzed student achievement data to inform instructional decision-making, facilitated professional learning for staff and collaborated with teachers to promote high-quality instruction across grade levels.

๐Ÿ‘‹ Say hello to the new Assistant Principal of Oak Park Elementary, Brentwood alumna Carlene Martinez!

โ€œI step into this new role with tremendous pride and a deep sense of appreciation,โ€ Martinez said. โ€œAs a Brentwood graduate, this community has helped shape who I am both personally and professionally. I am honored to continue serving Brentwood in a new capacity and look forward to strengthening relationships, building upon the meaningful work already underway, and helping every student develop confidence, feel valued, and recognize their full potential.โ€

Martinez brings nearly two decades of experience in education and instructional leadership, with a career dedicated to supporting multilingual learners, strengthening instructional practices, and building meaningful partnerships with students, families, and staff. Throughout her service in Brentwood, she has worked collaboratively with teachers and administrators to expand equitable learning opportunities, strengthen instruction, and support the academic and social-emotional growth of students.

Martinez began her career as a bilingual classroom teacher, serving students across multiple elementary grade levels. Her experience in bilingual education provided a strong foundation for her continued work supporting multilingual learners and fostering culturally and linguistically responsive learning environments. Throughout her years in the classroom, she worked closely with students and families to support language development, academic achievement, and meaningful connections between home and school.

Most recently, Martinez served as a Teacher on Special Assignment and SIFE Embedded Coach, providing targeted instructional support for Students with Interrupted Formal Education across multiple elementary schools. In this role, she collaborated with teachers and administrators to analyze student data, implement evidence-based instructional strategies, and develop interventions responsive to studentsโ€™ academic and language-development needs. She also worked closely with families to strengthen home-school partnerships and ensure students received coordinated support.
