If this doesn't get you fired up to kick a young person into gear, I don't know what will. Ben saves $2000 a year for 8 years from age 19 until age age 26 and then never saves any more. Arthur decides to start saving to catch up so he starts saving at age 27 and saves $2000 a year for the next 39 years until age 65. Now they're both 65 and Ben only put in $16,000 and now has almost $2.3 million dollars. Arthur put in $78,000 and now has $1.5 million dollars. You do the math. Compound interest at an average S&P 500 return rate shows that you should start investing as soon as you can.
