Thank you to our extended family for joining us today at Veterans Park for our annual off-the-mat gathering.

The one thing that makes us as happy as watching our students grow healthier, more confident, and step into leadership within their own circles is seeing the friendships forming between their families.

Twenty-one years in Brentwood, and days like today are the reason.

Whatever technology arrives next, it will never replace this. Human connection, warmth, and camaraderie are built in person, on the mats and around a picnic table.

Thank you for being part of our journey. We look forward to seeing everyone back on the mats Monday.

Drop a comment if you were there yesterday. 😃

Seven teenagers between 14 and 17 years old. Years on the mats. All of them have earned their spot in the advanced adult program.

In an age of social media, phones, constant distraction, and friends who may not be the best influence, these seven have displayed resilience and dedication. It shows now in their self-esteem.

Their parents deserve just as much credit. They haven’t let them fold, and that’s the reason these seven are where they are today.

Talent didn’t build their skills and confidence. It was showing up.

Proud of them, and thankful for the parents who don’t let their kids quit the moment they feel like it.

Keep inspiring and leading by example, Kivian, Danny, Sophia, Lincoln, Christine, Layla, and Barrett. 👏🏼

Parents, how long has your child been training, and what kept them in it?

The “Turtle” position shows up two ways. Someone turns away to stop a guard pass, or they get sprawled on after a failed takedown attempt. Both times, the back is exposed.

That exposure is the whole lesson. Turtle has to be understood from both sides, because you will be there and so will your training partner.

Taking the back is the most dominant position in a fight. You see everything they do. They see nothing you do. Their arms lose reach, their legs lose base, and the finishes are already in front of you. Rear naked choke, collar chokes, joint locks when the choke gets defended.

It is also where size matters least. A smaller person who reaches the back controls the exchange regardless of who is stronger.

That is why we spend September here.

Five reminders for anyone who trains.

Many practitioners spend the drive home thinking about the next rank. Meanwhile the thing they will actually miss is happening tonight, in a normal class, with the same partners they see every week.

Ask anyone who has trained for years what kept them coming back. It is almost never the belt. It is the people.

Training partners and instructors end up being one of the most loyal circles a person has, because the bond was built through shared victory, shared defeat, and years of doing tough things together.

Stay present. The good old days are now.

Every year we open our mats to the officers who protect this community, at no cost to them or their agency.

The G.R.A.C.I.E.™ Defensive Tactics and Weapons Retention Seminar returns Saturday, October 3, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Two hours, entirely hands on, taught by Professor Crosley Gracie and our academy staff.

Officers will train weapon retention from standing and ground positions, escapes from the bottom, handcuffing from control positions, and the 21-foot rule. The system is built on leverage and timing rather than size or strength, which is why it works the same in a duty belt and body armor as it does on the mat.

This seminar is free and open to active-duty law enforcement only. Attendance is limited to 30 officers.

If you know an officer who should be on these mats, send this to them.
