We Love Dinosaurs
There are these old-school skills that quietly shaped generations of learners: handwriting, working through math problems with pencil and paper, organizing thoughts on a page, developing fine motor coordination, and simply building the core strength and endurance to sit, write, and think through a challenge. They are not flashy skills. In today’s digital world, they can almost seem outdated. Yet they remain foundational.
Perhaps you’ve wondered about them yourself. Your child is flying through online school, rarely writing anything down. At school they use Chromebooks. The backpack comes home almost empty. The grades are good, and you assume the school knows what it’s doing. Every now and then, though, you feel a small twinge of concern. Is something missing?
Maybe you’ve joined the homeschool movement and happily pay a monthly subscription for engaging platforms like Miacademy or more academically rigorous programs like Acellus. Your child is making steady progress. Everyone else is doing it. What could possibly be the problem?
The answer lies in the difference between declarative knowledge and procedural knowledge.
Declarative knowledge is knowing what. A child may know the answer, recognize the correct multiple-choice response, or move successfully through an online lesson. Procedural knowledge is knowing how. It is developed by physically manipulating information, making mistakes, correcting them, organizing ideas on paper, and persevering through the discomfort of trial and error.
When learning becomes almost entirely screen-based, we risk neglecting these procedural skills. Spatial organization, sequencing, handwriting fluency, tactile awareness, fine motor control, executive functioning, frustration tolerance, and sustained attention are all strengthened through repeated physical practice. They are not separate from learning—they are part of learning.
There is no magic formula in AI, nor in any online platform. Digital instruction is a powerful tool, but it cannot replace the developmental work that happens when a child repeatedly picks up a pencil, sketches a diagram, solves a problem on paper, builds with blocks, cuts with scissors, writes a paragraph by hand, or patiently works through a mistake.
These are what I affectionately call our dinosaur skills. They may seem old-fashioned, but they have survived for a reason. They build the architecture of the brain over time through practice, repetition, and perseverance.
If you’re wondering whether this matters, try a simple experiment. Hand your child a piece of paper and a pencil. Ask them to solve a few math problems without a calculator or keyboard. Watch how they organize the page. Can they keep their numbers aligned? Can they show their thinking? Do they erase, revise, and work through confusion?
Then compare that experience to what was expected when you were their age—or perhaps when their grandparents were. The goal isn’t nostalgia. It is simply to observe which skills are growing and which may quietly be fading.
Technology has transformed education in remarkable ways, and it deserves a place in the classroom. But it should remain a tool, not the foundation. If we want children who can think deeply, solve problems independently, and confidently navigate the physical world as well as the digital one, we must occasionally put the screens aside and return to books, paper, pencils, and the timeless work of learning by doing.
