Ever find yourself explaining something carefully and reasonably … but getting nowhere? Pay attention when these moments come.

Because, as Jonathan Swift said, reasoning will never correct an opinion that reasoning did not produce.

This is a useful reminder that better arguments can’t end every disagreement. Not every belief is built from evidence, and not every person is ready to be persuaded. Emotion, loyalty, pride, fear, or habit are often doing more work than logic ever did.

And that’s not only true in others. We’re not always as rational as we imagine.

Some people make persuasion look easy. It isn’t.

Aristotle defined rhetoric as “the faculty of observing in any given case the available means of persuasion.”

He was reminding us that the right words rarely arrive by accident. Good rhetoric is not verbal glitter or a trick for winning people over. It is learned and applied perception: the discipline of seeing what this moment, this audience, and this problem require … and then speaking it well.

So don’t mistake ease for raw talent. Persuasion, like any skill, is refined through patience and practice.

Ever been in a conversation that keeps jumping tracks – one issue to another – until everyone is lost? These tangents can feel useful, but often they just scatter attention.

An old Russian proverb says: “If you chase two rabbits, you will not catch either one.”

Focus matters. When we drift away from the point, ideas get muddled, and real understanding suffers. But when we stay with one thought long enough to fully examine it, real progress is possible.

So, the next time a conversation starts diverging, pause and ask: did we answer the last question?

Some phrases sound wise but say little. “It is what it is.” “Just saying.” “Agree to disagree.” They end conversations, not deepen them.

British philosopher Susan Stebbing warned against this kind of shortcut speech. She called it “potted thinking,” saying:

“Potted thinking is easily accepted, is concentrated in form, and has lost the vitamins essential to mental nourishment.”

In other words, it might sound clever, but it’s not real thought. So next time you reach for a tidy phrase, pause. Is it thinking—or just packaging?
