We May Finally Know How Magic Mushrooms Work to Relieve Depression For many people with treatment-resistant depression, in recent years hope has been offered by psychedelics such as psilocybin, the key active ingredient in magic mushrooms. It appears that psychedelics may 'flip the switch' on rigid brain networks,

"Conversation with a Fungus Fanatic"
Explore a year-round regimen for appreciating wild mushrooms! From hunting and YouTubing through the height of the season to painting mushrooms all winter, Anna McHugh is a North Carolina-based mushroom hunter and artist who will teach you the ins and outs of continuous learning, whether or not there are mushrooms in the forest. Learn some mushroom hunting fundamentals, like how to choose which fungi to focus on when you first start foraging and how to read weather reports with a mushroomer's eye. Then, feast your eyes and imagination on some of the more interesting fungal species in North America and get tips for finding, photographing, and then drawing them!
Please join us next Thursday to hear from Anna who does talks all over the country about mushrooms. Should be an interesting talk!

Coming up on next week's monthly member meeting the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society is proud to present "A tale of two continents" with Wendy So.
Currently a resident of Mendocino County, Wendy So was a newsletter editor and speaker coordinator for the Mycological Society of San Francisco. She has traveled with David Arora, chasing mushrooms from California to the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, American Southwest, Europe, Asia and Africa. Now she spends her free time experimenting in the kitchen with underappreciated mushrooms. She will talk about mushroom hunting and eating traditions in two mushroom-loving regions: southwest China and south-central Africa, and contrast those traditions with ours here in North America.

On the upcoming KPMS monthly membership meeting on Thursday February 10th, we are very excited to announce Alan Rockefeller as our guest speaker. Alan is the son of two scientist parents and has been immersed in the mushroom world for over 20 years.
He is Chief Mycologist for Mimosa Therapeutics, a citizen scientist, public speaker, biohacker and photographer who lives in Oakland, California. In 2001, he began his studies in the field of mycology, beginning with the fungi of California.
He's on the leading edge of mushroom DNA sequencing and has over 21,000 observations on Inaturalist.
He will be joining us to give a new talk that he does about how to photograph mushrooms, the right camera settings to use, and a lot of interesting mushroom identification.

WOW what a night!! The lunar eclipse exposed something magical once the moon's light was completely blocked out! During the peak of the lunar eclipse last night I noticed there were glowing green logs all over Kalaloch beach!! Upon closer inspection I realized this was due to a bioluminescent fungus! It looked like something straight out of Avatar 🤯 This is different from the bioluminescent algae that causes the waves to glow blue. This is more like a mushroom growing on the dead trees that were washed up from the recent storm. They were glowing bright green, extremely visible to the naked eye!! I spent the rest of the night walking the beach finding more and more logs that were glowing bright green, like a glow-stick! This type of bioluminescence seems to follow the same rules as the glowing algae. As soon as the eclipse was over, and the moon was shining bright again, I could no longer see the logs glowing. It was such an amazing reward for a failed attempt at capturing the lunar eclipse 💚
This made it on this year's Bioluminescence Calendar!! It will be color-coded with dates best for bioluminescence viewing 💙💚
