"In time, the Takayoshis' house became the showplace of Yama. Even though all the homes in Yama but it were unpainted, the fact that it were painted white seemed appropriate. French doors led out into a Japanese garden which was enclosed by a picket fence. Overhead there was a lattice arbor on which a lovely wisteria vine was entwined. Tamao filled the garden with flowers and Tomegoro put some stone lanterns in it. The garden sloped off toward the creek. In the summer, the family put tables outside for their customers."
