We are starting the year off by working on building a better relationship with ourselves. If you’re interested in understanding how to calm the “critical” voice in your head, or you’re wanting to understand how to stop repeating the same cycle over and over in your life or relationships, you might be ready to join us for this 9week transformative experience.

Transforming the Mother Wound. (Re)claim your personal agency and (Re)connect with your inner goddess.

I don’t usually share my politics directly on my social. I do talk about trauma, leadership, compassion and the inequities/macro & micro aggressions facing women, ethnic and religious minorities and the impact of poverty. I talk about this a lot.

People are suffering trauma, hurt, fear, rage, anxiety, distress and despair today. Responding with anything other than compassionate kindness/enquiry is not only insensitive, it’s trauma insensitive.

Personally, I’m devastated. Numb. And feeling a loss of hope today. I will feel differently eventually but today I am wallowing in pain and sadness. I’m trying to release the heaviness in my heart so I can open it up to regain hope and trust.

If anyone you know would like to talk, please feel free to reach out directly.

Friday evening, I’m planning to hold a “prayer”, reiki, meditation circle-not sure what to call it- at the nook. 7pm. Nothing needed, only a desire for connection and being heard. Reach out if you’re interested or want additional information.

Managers are not Coaches

Companies pay managers to get results. Yes, developing people is part of getting results but not at the expense of actually achieving results. Often managers assess if a person and the job are mismatched. When that happens, the manager is doing service to both the employee and the company. Employees may be mis-matched for a host of reasons, some of which may include:
1. They are performing above the needs of the job and should be promoted.
2. They have important skills that are better leveraged in other roles.
3. The employee has interest and aptitude to work in a different role.
4. The employee has life needs that require an accommodation not available in current role but could be supported in a different role for which the employee is qualified.

The list goes on. We often think mismatch means "firing”. That is not usually where managers who care about their teams start.

The biggest reason the manager is not a coach is because there is a hierarchical relationship between the manager and the employee. They may be equals outside of work, but at work, the manager always holds overt power.

Coaches are different. First and foremost, coaches help people through a Self Led change. Coaches are sought after by the person being coached. This means,
1. the coach is invited to the process by the person (coachee). Managers are assigned to employees.
2. The coachee desires the change.
3. There is no hierarchy in a coaching relationship.

What about in sports where players have coaches, isn’t that going against what I’m outlining? No. Because in this case, the “coach” is called a coach but they’re acting as a manager. The “results” in this case are the results that the player and the team are able to achieve.

Ultimately, a coach works to hold space for the client to work through their own self-led transformation. A coach should be a safe space for a client.

A manager/employee relationship can’t by its nature be a “safe space” because there is a power differential that prevents an employee from being fully open or honest with their manager. The same is true for the manager who can’t always be transparent with a team member.

Leadership is hard! It’s easy to judge someone - to see their flaws and fallibility just to call them out on their humanity. We have all made errors in our actions and our judgments. A leader understands that they will be judged, but takes a stand with incomplete data. A good leader knows that when they know better, they do better. Owning our vulnerabilities and making ourselves better community members for the benefit of all of us, while not intuitive, can be learned if we are willing to heal ourselves first.
