Psychedelics can be powerful tools for transformation, but they can also shatter the psyche in unexpected ways. Roberto Assagiolii said, "Instances of such confusion, more or less pronounced, are not uncommon among people dazzled by contact with truths which are too powerful for their mental capacities to grasp and assimilate." This is where the topic of spiritual emergencies comes up.

Everyone is navigating their own struggles. Recognizing this shared human experience allows us to approach interactions with empathy, acknowledging that outward actions can be a reflection of internal battles. But this isn't to say or suggest that actions are excusable just because of internal suffering. Just because we might be struggling internally doesn't mean we should be placing that suffering onto others.

Learn how to use music as an active therapeutic tool in psychedelic-assisted sessions from experienced practitioners in the field.

Music is one of the most powerful and least understood elements of psychedelic-assisted therapy. Psychedelics Today is proud to partner with Polaris Insight Center to present this advanced course that moves beyond playlists into the deeper intelligence of music as a therapeutic ally. Drawing from decades of clinical experience, research, and practice, this training explores how sound shapes emotional arcs, supports non-ordinary states, and facilitates profound inner movement. Designed for clinicians, facilitators, and practitioners ready to refine their craft, this course offers practical frameworks, real-world insights, and a more intentional relationship with music in transformational work.

Course Instructors: Veronika Gold, LMFT • Ryan Hoffman, LMFT • Eric Sienknecht, PsyD • Byron Metcalf, PhD • Claudia Cuentas, LMFT • David Starfire

In this episode, Peter Alberding explains how ketamine helped him move through several phases of his illness of ALS: fear of what was coming, the experience of losing bodily function, and then a more direct reckoning with mortality and personal agency. He says he is no longer afraid to die, even though he does not want to die.
He also describes a gap in standard medical care. ALS treatment may address the physical course of the disease while leaving psychological and existential suffering under-addressed. This episode points toward a role for ketamine-assisted psychotherapy in serious illness and end-of-life care, while staying clear about the limits of one patient’s experience.
