Breckenridge Huskies Weekly Athletics Recap: August 31 – September 5
From dominant shutouts on the gridiron to back-to-back sweeps on the volleyball court, Breckenridge student-athletes made a major statement this week. Varsity football stormed past New Buffalo in Bellevue with an electric 28-0 victory highlighted by a 93-yard touchdown pass, while both Varsity and JV volleyball proved unstoppable with flawless match sweeps. On the JV gridiron, the young Huskies showed true grit despite a tough battle against Mio-AuSable, while Cross Country, Sideline Cheer, and Girls Golf dedicated their week to refining their skills and building team chemistry.
Varsity Football
The Varsity football team traveled to Bellevue for a neutral-site matchup against New Buffalo and put on a clinic, earning a commanding 28-0 shutout. All 28 points were scored in an explosive first half, set off by a thrilling 93-yard touchdown connection from quarterback Gavin Corbat to Braylon Mayle in the first quarter. Corbat finished the night 14-for-23 with 181 passing yards and 3 passing touchdowns, along with 47 yards rushing. Ely Chapin hauled in two touchdown catches (56 total yards), while Carter Suhr grounded out 38 rushing yards and a touchdown, adding 9 tackles, a sack, and a TFL on defense. The defensive effort was unrelenting, led by Truman Smith (12 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 TFL) and Bentley MacLaren (12 tackles, 2 PBUs, 1 INT) to lock down the victory.
Varsity Volleyball
It was a double-sweep week for Varsity Volleyball as they dominated MSAC foe Montabella and Sanford-Meridian, taking both home matches 3-0. Against Montabella (24-6, 25-9, 25-13), the team served up 20 aces, led by #2 Maddie Breece who delivered 6 kills, 9 aces, and 9 digs. In their 3-0 sweep of Sanford-Meridian (27-25, 25-13, 25-18), Maddie Breece exploded at the net with 16 kills and 16 digs, supported by Grace Slavik (15 assists, 3 aces) and Aubrey Peak (12 assists, 2 aces). The Huskies are locked in and finding their groove at just the right time.
JV Football
The JV Huskies hosted Mio-AuSable on Wednesday, showing relentless effort in a hard-fought 30-14 contest. Quarterback Collin Corbat ( #8) anchored the passing attack, completing 18 of 32 passes for 163 yards and 2 touchdowns. Wide receiver Carter Wolfgang ( #24) was a major threat, hauling in 7 receptions for 107 yards and 2 touchdowns, including a long gain of 38 yards, while adding 43 return yards. Defensively, Bennet Mapes ( #52) led the field with a massive 16-tackle performance (5 solo, 11 assists, 2 TFLs).
JV Volleyball
The JV Volleyball program mirrored the varsity's success with a solid week, topping Montabella 2-0 and battling past Meridian 2-1. Lillie Raysby had a monster week overall, anchoring the defense with a team-high 32 digs while adding 4 aces, 7 kills, and a block. Addie MacLaren was equally impactful on defense, racking up 22 digs to go with 5 aces. Emily Pryor directed the offense smoothly with 18 assists while adding 16 digs, 4 kills, and 4 aces. Up at the net, Kayla Bass delivered a big presence with 8 kills and 3 blocks, supported by Taylor Staley’s balanced line of 5 kills, 19 digs, and 4 aces. Lillyonna Bowker chipped in with 12 digs and 3 aces to help round out a dominant team effort.
Cross Country, Girls Golf, Sideline Cheer & Equestrian
It was a training and prep week across these sports, with no official competition results to report. Girls Golf had their scheduled match canceled due to weather but hit the practice greens to refine their technique. Cross Country put in key miles to sharpen endurance, Sideline Cheer focused on team chemistry and perfecting upcoming routines, and Equestrian enjoyed a scheduled bye week.
