Pinyin and Zhuyin are great, don't get me wrong. It not only helps with character recognition with speech, it can also help with reading foundations.

The question I'm really trying to get at is, is it really necessary? Not at all!

You don't really need to know how to pronounce every single character to understand a Chinese text. It's in a similar thought process as if you were to be reading an English text but you don't know how to pronounce a word you are unsure of.

I'll be honest, I never knew how to pronounce "Hermoine" from HP until the movies came out... Never did that steer me away from understanding the story!

Reading to a child and having the child read back is important, yes. But don't sweat it if you cannot remember a pronunciation of a word or if you/your child can't pronounce the character! Take a look at the character to see if it resembles something. The more it resembles something you know, the easier it will actually be for you to remember the character!

I'm sure not only are you able to know 三 because it's easy, but it also represents something meaningful to you!

As for 累, I'm sure you see the field on the top portion of the character and silk on the bottom of the character resembling (traditionally) men working in the field and women working on silk -- And it's tiresome!

Some of these may be frowned upon but hear me out. I am a bilingual teacher, a bilingual advocate.. the first thing I should do is encourage multilingualism.

"Then how do you make sure the kids are actually acquiring the target language if they speak whatever language they want?"
✨Kiddos know I will always respond in the target language (think of it as the OPOL strategy in the school setting).
✨If they speak in another language I know (ie. English), I will repeat back what they said in the target language.
✨We reflect daily on how much target language we used that day.
✨Students should always feel proud about their bilingualism 🤗

Dear Teachers and Admins,

I know the list goes on. And if you're not ready to go back, I don't blame you. You already have so much to worry about.

Usually I would say "hang in there,"... But let's be honest, how can you? They say this will only make us stronger, but is it worth the journey?

Whatever your decisions are for the upcoming year, you are valid in all the decisions you make.

Take good care of yourself, because many times, it feels like others won't.

Hi 👋🏼 My name is Shawn and I make content about Bilingual Education, language development, and raising bilingual kids. I am fascinated by culture and how it shapes languages and ourselves!

As a former Dual Immersion teacher, sharing these fills me up with so much joy. I continue to learn Mandarin Chinese so a lot of my inspirations come from my learning process.

Are you ready to move on to the next level of language acquisition? 🤩

Listening to music and audiobooks are GREAT to start and continue to have. While we do that, we can add more support with language development!!

What's great about ACTFL standards is that it's not related with age, but more with which stage a language learner is proficient.

But let's first identity... Can your learner (or yourself) be identified as "Novice Low"?

Typical day in a teaching life was for me -
5am - Wake/Wash up/Breakfast
6am - Head to work
6:30-8am - Prep
8am - School starts
12pm - Lunch (30 minutes if prioritize myself)
2pm - School ends/Meetings
4pm - Brief break
6pm - Meeting ends (if we completely fried our brain)/Prep
7pm - Head home
7:30pm - Dinner/Wash up/Prep
8pm - Lights off

And this would be a light day 🙏🏼 Not including any night events, after school activities, report card season, etc.

I easily put in 60+ hours a week during the school year and also work during the summer (Professional Development, Lesson Planning, Curriculum Development, Translations, etc.).

Why is this a norm🥺

For the teacher moms out there, their confession has always been "I spend more time working with other people's children than my own children" 😩

Let's give more grace 🥺🙏🏼

Etc.

However, did you know about 拜託? It's on the verge of begging 😳
Fun story: my student used a translation and found the word 拜託, and wouldn't stop using it! To my ears, they sounded like they were begging for everything 😅 but I couldn't be mad because that student rarely wanted to speak Mandarin so I just had to celebrate they were speaking it hahaha ♥️

I didn't hear this term often growing up. Once I started to understand this term as an adult, I knew this is one of the vocabularies I *HAD* to teach my class.

It was tricky to explain, for sure! But like with any vocabularies, the more often I used it, the more you can connect emotionally with this vocabulary.

THIS. IS. WHAT. I. NEEDED. (and if you follow me on my stories, you know that I needed this, this weekend)

I grew up surpressing and swallowing my tears (to the point where my throat feels uncomfortable. If you know the feeling in your throat of holding tears, you know what I mean).

It wasn't until *after* college, I started to learn that being able to feel my emotions and express it safely that I started to understand what it means when I hear "rainbows appear after the rain" (rain = my tears).

Everyone expresses themselves differently and that's the beauty of all the ways to handle our stress. Crying should never be dismissed. It should also be interepreted as a sign of communication.

When did you start learning that crying is ACTUALLY a strength?
