📐 AP Calculus season has officially started.

One of our high school students settling into her AP Calculus work this week. Our older students get more than homework help — pacing through the course, working problem sets properly, and building toward the spring exam instead of cramming for it.

Kindergarten phonics and AP Calculus happen in the same building, on the same afternoon.

🎹 First piano lessons of the school year — and yes, lollipops were involved.

Three of our youngest students met their piano teacher this week and got their first look at the grand piano. For a lot of them it is the first real instrument they have ever sat down at, so we start with curiosity long before we start with scales.

Gifted testing is a reasoning test, not a knowledge test - and that is true whether your child takes the OLSAT or the CogAT. 🧩

So there is nothing to study. But there IS something to practice: the format. Most young students have never seen a pattern matrix or heard directions read aloud only once, and a capable child can lose points to that alone.

Placentia and Yorba Linda parents: if your child is in 3rd or 4th grade, PYLUSD is screening them for GATE this year whether you signed up or not. 🎯

The CogAT measures reasoning, not memorized content. There is nothing to study, which is exactly why capable kids lose points on unfamiliar question formats. And if your child does not qualify by 4th grade, that is not the end - students can keep testing through 7th.

Our GATE Prep program here in Placentia/Yorba Linda covers every reasoning category in small groups, starting with an assessment. Fall testing runs October through December, so now is the time to start. 📚

One student modeling multiplication - drawing the rows out until the problem makes sense. Another coloring a shark square by square, solving a math fact for every color.

Same skill. Different door in.

That is most of what we do here: finding the version of a lesson that finally clicks for that particular kid.

🎂 It's back.

Three times a year - the first week of school, the Christmas season, and the last week before summer - we deliver a cake to the front office of every school we serve. We have been doing it long enough that now, when the box shows up, someone always asks:

"Is it that cake?"

It is.

Today it went to Golden, Brookhaven, Olinda, Country Hills, Falcon, Mariposa, Laguna Road, Sunset Lane, and Beechwood.
